Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern California coast, the Big Sur coastline area, the Sierra Nevada including Yosemite Valley and Lake Tahoe, Mt. Shasta which is the second-highest peak in the Cascade Range, and the Central Valley.

Native Americans arrived in Northern California perhaps as early as 5,000 to 8,000 BCE, and successive waves of arrivals led to one of the most densely populated areas of pre-Columbian North America. The arrival of European explorers from the early 1500s to the mid-1700s, did not establish European settlements in Northern California. In 1770, the Spanish mission at Monterey was the first European settlement in the area, followed by other missions along the coast—eventually extending as far north as Sonoma County.

Definitions of what constitutes "Northern California" can vary. When the state is divided into two areas (Northern and Southern California) the term "Northern California" conventionally refers to the forty-eight counties north of the ten counties of Southern California; the term is also occasionally applied to the area north of the Tehachapi Mountains.

Because of California's large size and diverse geography, the state can be subdivided in other ways as well. For example, the Central Valley is a distinct region in itself both culturally and topographically from coastal California, though in Northern versus Southern California divisions, the Sacramento Valley and most of the San Joaquin Valley are usually placed in Northern California. Some residents of far Northern California define their region as encompassing only those areas to the north of the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento metropolitan areas.

12. Fresno Flooding-How To Deal With The Damage
July 30, 2008

Like many counties in northern and central California, Fresno County relies on a system of levees to hold back floodwaters. However, FEMA recently revised its flood maps. In Fresno County, most of the existing levees were not certified to withstand a 100-year flood event. In addition, FEMA changed a huge swatch of land from Zone X (which signifies levee protection in a 100-year flood) to Zone A – flood hazard. The area most significantly affected by this change is mainly north of Kings River between the Fresno Slough and Highway 99; the Fresno Slough corridor; and areas between Mend... (read more)

Ava Vincent is an adult film star that is quickly climbing the charts as one of the most popular female stars in the industry. It’s that time of the year again. As we move into the middle of the hot summer months, the surf and turf is rolling again in Del Mar. Yep, the horse races have started again. Del Mar is a beautiful little coast town located in the North County area of San Diego. It carries the profile of a large hill rolling down to the ocean. When Canadian Anne Murray sang her hit song “Snowbirds,” she wasn’t singing about Canadian Geese. She was singing to the thousands of snow-bound Canadians called ‘snowbirds’ who make the yearly pilgrimage from chilly Canada and the Pacific Northwest to warmer climates in places like Southern California. There, snowbirds nest for the winter months, basking in the warm southern California sunshine, in quaint resort gem towns like Carpinteria. 20. Golf Stakes
July 10, 2008

This week I was playing golf in Northern California at the Sea Ranch Golf Course. It's a tough but enjoyable course, with some beautiful vistas and fun holes. It's a link style golf course similar to those that you would find in bonnie Scotland. It has it's share of bunkers, water, trees, tall grass and even grazing deer hazards. Which brings me to the point of this article. As I golfed along with my companions I found myself continually instructing them on the rules governing the different colored stakes and lines found on the golf course. It made me think that most beginning golfer... (read more)

21. Are you heading for financial ruin?
July 09, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I drove all the way to Northern California to see the movie Sex and the City with my best friend. Without giving away the plot, one of the many lessons of the movie, was when to make decisions based on emotion and when to make them based on logic. Both elements are necessary for the most effective decision making. With my analytical background, I often make decisions based on logic. A pros and cons list is often the favorite tool in my arsenal. However, I realized that everyone is different and responds to different triggers. So in this issue, in discussing how to have a...
