Coordinates 45°0'0?N, 0°0'0?EThe Northern Hemisphere[1] is the half of a planet that is north of the equator—the word hemisphere literally means 'half ball'. It is also that half of the celestial sphere north of the celestial equator. Earth's northern hemisphere contains most of the land and most of the human population (about 90%). Due to the Earth's axial tilt, winter lasts from the winter solstice (typically December 22) to the vernal equinox (typically March 20) whilst summer lasts from the summer solstice (typically June 21) through to the autumnal equinox (typically September 21). The Arctic is the region north of the Arctic Circle. Its climate is characterized by cold winters and cool summers. Precipitation mostly comes in the form of snow. The Arctic experiences some days in summer on which the sun never sets, and some days in winter on which the sun never rises. The duration of these phases varies from one day for places right on the Arctic Circle to several months near the North Pole itself.

No, I am not a gardener. Whew, it just feels good to say that. Here in the Northern Hemisphere it is time to plant gardens and mow the lawns. But this year the day after Mother's Day it was almost freezing at 36 F.
It takes the guilt away for me to say I am not a gardener. Don't get me wrong, I have done my share. I love the taste of veggies fresh from the garden. When our five girls were at home I would wake them up on Saturday ... (read more)

All those empire-waist gowns and tops that looked so stylish not so long ago suddenly have turned into the fashion equivalent of pumpkins, morphing from au courant to out-of-date as quickly as the New Year's clocks chimed 12. Or so say northern hemisphere trend-watchers.
