Short story&_160;· NovellaA novella is a written, fictional, prose narrative longer than a novelette but shorter than a novel. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Nebula Awards for science fiction define the novella as having a word count between 17,500 and 40,000.[1] Other definitions start as low as 10,000 words and run as high as 70,000 words.[2][3][4] Although the novella is a common literary genre in several European languages, it is less common in English. English-speaking readers may be most familiar with the novellas of John Steinbeck, particularly Of Mice and Men and The Pearl, Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis and In the Penal Colony, George Orwell's Animal Farm, Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's, Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Thomas Mann's Death in Venice, Philip Roth's Goodbye, Columbus, and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Novelle (plural of novella) also appear in television form as telenovelle. Like the English word "novel", the English word "novella" is derived from the Italian word "novella" (plural "novelle"), for a tale, a piece of news. As the etymology suggests, novellas originally were news of town and country life worth repeating for amusement and edification.[citation needed]

1. An Exceptional Collection Of Short Horror Fiction
September 17, 2009
On the Verge of Madness by George Wilhite is like a perfectly cooked steak...dark on the outside and a little bloody in the middle. This collection of fiction features eight very different stories, each showcasing Wilhite's considerable talent and vast knowledge of the horror genre. His work has already drawn comparison to Poe and Lovecraft. But let me tell you, Wilhite's own twisted style and warped voice is evident on every page. The opening novella, Victor Chaldean and the Portal is worth the price of admission. Victor is desperate to solve the disappearance of his wife. After he begi... (read more)

2. Muriel Spark's Novella The Prime Of Miss Brodie Deconstructed
August 18, 2009
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a rich novella that needs to be conquered several times; that is, round and around and with noise, as the Israelites conquered Jericho. Besides the enchantment of the suspense and the mystery, one can learn about negative teaching, ethics, and politics.
Having tried countless times to form a coherent timeline for this novella, this last time I gave up the idea, deciding that it was easier to do it for One Hundred Years of Solitude. One has to accept the fact that it is that the story has neither beginning nor end, but only a thick juicy Byzantine middl... (read more)

9. Alexandrite Gemstone Jewelry, Myth & Symbolism
June 08, 2007
Although relatively young compared to other gemstones, alexandrite is not at a loss for history, myth and symbolism with which to surround itself. In the late 19th century, the Russian writer Nikolai Semyonovich Lesov wrote a novella, “Alexandrite: Mysterious Interpretation of a True Fact”, wherein alexandrite is defined as being 'prophetic'. In his book “The Key to the Grand Mysteries”, the French Victorian author and magician Eliphas Levi referred to alexandrite as a mystical gem that clears and strengthens the blood vessels.
