O?ahu or Oahu (pronounced /o?'??hu?/ in English and [o'??hu] in Hawaiian), known as "The Gathering Place", is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands and most populous of the islands in the State of Hawai?i. The state capital Honolulu is located on the southeast coast. Including small close-in offshore islands such as Ford Island and the islands in Kaneohe Bay and off the eastern coast, it has a total land area of 596.7&_160;square miles (1,545.4&_160;km2), making it the 20th largest island in the United States.[1] In greatest dimension, this volcanic island is 44&_160;miles (71&_160;km) long and 30&_160;miles (48&_160;km) across. The length of the shoreline is 227&_160;miles (365&_160;km). The island is the result of two separate shield volcanoes Wai?anae and Ko?olau, with a broad "valley" or saddle (the central O?ahu Plain) between them. The highest point is Mt. Ka'ala in the Wai?anae Range, rising to 4,003&_160;feet (1,220&_160;m) above sea level.[2]

The island is home to about 900,000 people (approximately 75% of the resident population of the state) and partly because of this, O?ahu has for a long time been nicknamed "The Gathering Place". However, the term O?ahu has no confirmed meaning in Hawaiian, other than that of the place itself.[3] Ancient Hawaiian tradition attributes the name's origin in the legend of Hawai?iloa, the Polynesian navigator credited with discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. The story relates that he named the island after a son.

The city of Honolulu—largest city, state capital, and main deepwater marine port for the State of Hawai?i—is located here. As a jurisdictional unit, the entire island of O?ahu is in the City & County of Honolulu, although as a place name, Honolulu occupies only a portion of the southeast end of the island (essentially, the Honolulu District). Well-known features found on O?ahu include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Kane?ohe Bay, Kailua Bay, North Shore.

The old Kingdom of Oahu was once ruled by the most ancient Ali?i in all of the Hawaiian Islands. The first great king of Oahu was Mailikukahi, the law maker, who was followed by many generation of excellent monarchs.[citation needed] Kualii was the first of the warlike kings and so were his sons. In 1773, the throne fell upon Kahahana, the son of Elani of Ewa. In 1783 Kahekili II King of Maui conquered Oahu and deposed the reigning family and then made his son Kalanikupule king of Oahu. Kamehameha the Great would conquer Kalanikupule's force in the Battle of Nu?uanu. And with the conquest of O?ahu in 1795 Kamehameha founded the Hawaiian Kingdom Hawaii would not be unifed until the islands of Kauai and Niihau surrender under King Kaumualii in 1810. Kamehameha III moved his capital from Lahaina, Maui to Honolulu, O?ahu in 1845. ?Iolani Palace, built later by other members of the royal family, is still standing, and is the only royal palace on American soil.

2. Why You Should Invest in Commercial Real Estate in Hawaii?
October 16, 2008

All commercial real estate markets are based on supply and demand. Hawaii’s market has typically been limited in supply, and demand has outstripped the existing supply. General interest and demand for Hawaii commercial properties comes from people’s fascination with Hawaii and spending time in, and surrounded by, its natural beauty. In trying to protect that natural beauty, difficulties in rezoning are wide spread across Oahu, Maui, The Big Island and Kauai. A very small portion of our states land is zoned for urban and commercial or industrial purposes. Typically, a developer will need to spe... (read more)

3. Hawaii Homes and Volcanoes for sale
October 13, 2008

Can anybody find a home? For investment or for living in, looking for homes for sale in Hawaii could be just part of that all-in package vacation. Which is what some friends of mine discovered recently on their vacation to the islands. They liked the country so much they bought a piece of it. When people talk about Hawaii, they think of Waikiki beach or Honolulu; the capital city located on the Oahu Island. Fair enough-but what people don’t realize when they look at a map of the island is, Oahu is actually one of the smaller islands within the archipelago group of hundreds of other Hawaiia... August 24, 2008

Just about one and a half mile from the Old Haleiwa Town on Kamehameha Highway in the island of Oahu is a feeding ground for the green sea turtles, the Laniakea beach. Once you arrive there, there are branches and shrubs covering a good portion of the beach. It almost seems as if someone had gone through a great deal in order to hide this beach from the public, especially when you see the signs and banners once you are behind the shrubs and branches where the drivers passing by on the two way lane won't be able to see much of the turtle signs. Maybe this was someone's idea of keeping the crow... (read more)

Waikiki Car Rentals Waikiki is about 1½ miles of hotels, shops and restaurants, which renting a car would be very frustrating due to the parking limitations. As such, parking is not a recommended option if you will be staying in Waikiki. It's a lot better to be walking or using the public transportation service or the taxi. It is a different story if you want to visit the rest... (read more)
