Okinawa Prefecture (???, Okinawa-ken?, Okinawan Uchinaa) is one of Japan's southern prefectures, and consists of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000&_160;km long, which extends southwest from Kyushu (the southwesternmost of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan. Okinawa's capital, Naha, is located in the southern part of the largest and most populous island, Okinawa Island, which is approximately half-way between Kyushu and Taiwan. The disputed Senkaku Islands (Mandarin Diaoyu Islands) are also administered as part of Okinawa Prefecture at present.

The oldest evidence of human existence in the Ryukyu islands was discovered in Naha and Yaese[1]. Some human bone fragments from the Paleolithic era were unearthed, but there is no clear evidence of Paleolithic remains. Japanese Jomon influences are dominant in the Okinawa Islands, although clay vessels in the Sakishima Islands have a commonality with those in Taiwan.

The first mention of the word Ryukyu was written in the Book of Sui. This Ryukyu might refer to Taiwan, not the Ryukyu islands.[citation needed] Okinawa was the Japanese word depicting the islands, first seen in the biography of Jianzhen, written in 779. Agricultural societies begun in the 8th century slowly developed until the 12th century. Since the islands are located in the center of the East China Sea relatively close to Japan, China and South-East Asia, the Ryukyu Kingdom became a prosperous trading nation. Also during this period, many Gusukus, similar to castles, were constructed. The Ryukyu Kingdom had a tributary relationship with the Chinese Empire beginning in the 15th century.

In 1609 the Satsuma clan, which controlled the region that is now Kagoshima Prefecture, invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom. Following the invasion the Ryukyu Kingdom surrendered to the Satsuma and was forced to form a tributary relationship with Satsuma and the Tokugawa shogunate, in addition to its previous relationship with China. Ryukyuan sovereignty was maintained since complete annexation would create a problem with China. The Satsuma clan earned considerable profits from trades with China during a period in which foreign trade was heavily restricted by the shogunate.

2. Remembering Mom and Our Elderly Loved Ones
November 01, 2009

I always say, “You get old when you stop going for it no matter what your age.” I have sometimes seen 25 year olds have less energy and drive than some 80 year olds. In fact, just recently I saw a popular video of an 87 year old woman who did a mean SALSA. Don’t you want that kind of energy, sassiness, and exuberance at that age? I sure do! My mother, who is 88, is recuperating after taking a fall in her living room just a few days ago. Unfortunately, she fell on her good knee. My mother has always taken great pride in a clean and organized house. I guess it’s her German upbringing. Well,... (read more)

Karate-Do is a japanese martial art, introduced from Okinawa in 1922. In Japanese Kara means empty ; Te means hand ; Do means the way, therefore'Karate-Do' means'the way of the empty hand'. August 31, 2009

OkinawaThe United States on Monday said it would not renegotiate a deal on U.S. military bases in Japan with that country's incoming government, which campaigned for a review of the U.S. troop presence in Japan. U.S. officials add that the incoming Japanese officials might moderate their views when they take office.  The Obama administration says it looks forward to working closely and maintaining a strong alliance with the next Japanese government, but that it is ruling out any renegotiation of the bases agreement that was finalized earlier this year.Under the agreement, painstakingly n... 15. Karate - The Way of The Empty Hand
April 07, 2008

Karate (??) or karate-do (???) is one of the most fascinating martial art in the world today. For me, there is not any martial art that is as flexible and enjoyable as sport. Karate as a martial art was developed and diversified from various forms of Chinese Kung-fu on the island of Okinawa and was taken to Japan in the early years of the twentieth century. Karate is NOT an expression of aggression. Karate is not about violence at all. It is about respect, disciplin of mind and body, confidence, control of oneself, and ends with courtesy and leads to Wa-No-Michi (peace in one's lif... (read more)

16. Horseshoe Tekko
March 28, 2008

The Tekko is a weapon that originated in Okinawa, Japan. Because weapons were banned in Okinawa, the Okinawans sought to put otherwise agricultural implements to martial use. The "Tekko" arose as a dual use for horseriding gear, although the exact part of that gear remains in some dispute.Differing schools advocate for the stirrup or horsehoe. The stirrup version consists of a semicircle, with two ends connected by a bar. Some think of this as solely a fist loaded weapon: primarily a form of knuckleduster (brass knuckles). However, stirrup of Okinawan lineage does not have dividers to sepa... (read more)

17. Okinawans Protest US Military Presence
March 23, 2008

Thousands of people gathered in Okinawa, Japan, Sunday to protest crimes by members of the U.S. military stationed on the island. The protesters rallied in heavy rain in the town of Chatan, where a 14-year-old girl allegedly was raped by a U.S. serviceman in February. Okinawa Mayor Mitsuko Tomon told the demonstrators that when the people of Okinawa complain about the behavior of U.S. service members, their "voices have been trampled" by U.S. and Japanese authorities. Also Sunday, the U.S. military said it would cooperate with the Japanese investigation of the killing of a taxi driver found ... (read more)

February 29, 2008

The U.S. military says it took a Marine into custody Friday who was being held by Japanese authorities on charges of raping a teenager on the southern island of Okinawa. U.S. officials say they are continuing to investigate the alleged rape, adding that it is too early to speculate whether any further legal action would be taken against the U.S. Marine. Japan's Kyodo News Agency and Jiji Press say the U.S. serviceman was released after the alleged victim's family decided not to press charges. Staff Sergeant Tyrone Luther Hadnott was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-ol... (read more)

19. Less is More for the Okinawans
February 28, 2008

For the past six years I have explored parts of the world where people live the longest healthiest lives—regions called Blue Zones—and tried to decipher their secrets. When visiting the Okinawa region, it was obvious that the community’s secret was diet. For the Okinawans, the diet secret is less is more and more is less. A typical Okinawan meal consists of large amounts of vegetables and a piece of protein. Rather then the American version of protein, which is typically an oversized hamburger, the Okinawan’s rely heavily on tofu to provide the proper nutrients. The tofu prepared in this ... (read more)

20. An Okinawan Centenarian
February 28, 2008

For the past six years I have explored parts of the world where people live the longest healthiest lives—regions called Blue Zones—and tried to decipher their secrets. During one Quest, I visited Okinawa, that’s where my team met Ushi Okushima. Ushi is a 99 year-old woman who starts every day with a bowl of miso-vegetable soup followed with three hours of work in her garden, a nap, time with friends, then puts herself to bed with a glass of sake. Assuming that her longevity was connected to her diet, I was surprised to hear that my team leader, Sayoko, had a different conclusion.Sayoko, a f... (read more)

22. It's Never Too Early to Start Good Life Habits
February 28, 2008

It's usually not the young among us who are focused on improving their lifestyle and achieving longevity. Why? Simple: longevity's just not on your mind at a young age. But our research in the Blue Zones has shown that it's never to early to start developing healthy habits that will pay off much later in life.We used a forensic approach – looking at how Blue Zones centenarians lived the first half of their lives. Uniformly we found that the people who survived into their 100's had solidified their lifestyles early on. Take Okinawan women over 70 – the longest-lived population on the planet. Af... (read more)

Okinawa is a Japanese prefecture which is made up of nearly 60 different islands. Okinawa Japan has maintained its own language and cultural traditions separate from the Japanese mainland.
