A bottle of olive oilOver 750 million olive trees are cultivated worldwide, 95% of which are in the Mediterranean region. Most of global production comes from Southern Europe, North Africa and the Near East. World production in 2002 was 2.6 million tonnes,[2] of which Spain contributed 40% to 45%. In 2006, Turkey accounted for about 5% of world production, similar to the Spanish province of Jaén alone, well known for the biggest olive groves in the world.[3] Of the European production, 93% comes from Spain, Italy and Greece. Greece devotes 60% of its cultivated land to olive growing. It is the world's top producer of black olives and has more varieties of olives than any other country. Greece holds third place in world olive production with more than 132 million trees, which produce approximately 350,000&_160;tons of olive oil annually, of which 82% is extra-virgin[4] (see below for an explanation of terms). About half of the annual Greek olive oil production is exported, but only some 5% of this reflects the origin of the bottled product{fact}. Greece exports mainly to European Union (EU) countries, principally Italy, which receives about three-quarters of total exports. Olives are grown for oil in Greece, with Peloponnese being the source of 65% of Greek production, as well as in Crete, the Aegean Islands and Ionian Islands. The most prized Greek olive variety for oil production is the Koronéiki, originating from the area of Korone in Messenia. This variety grows well on mountain slopes and produces very small fruit; the high ratio of skin to flesh giving the oil its coveted aromatic qualities. The variety is also suited to the production of agourélaio, oil from olives that are slightly unripe. When crushed in presses that are not capable of grinding the stone, this oil is entirely free of acidity and possesses top-tier organoleptic characteristics. Because not crushing the stones reduces oil yield, production of agourélaio is limited to "boutique" presses run by entrepreneurs and small coöperatives.

November 12, 2009
Pure Olive Oil and Light Olive Oil are not as the names indicate. The former is considered lower quality produced using refining processes, while the latter is merely lighter in colour and flavour and is not low in fat content as some people might think. When you next visit the supermarket for a good olive oil read the labels, which should be clearly marked and graded by the International Olive Oil Council (IOOC). A good quality olive oil starts with Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), which is a superior grade of olive oil that is produced from the first pressing of olives by physical means, or ... (read more)

22. Discover Fish DHA and Its Benefits
October 16, 2009
Let’s face it. Fish DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) are unique nutrients. There are no other dietary sources for humans, as there are for other fatty acids.
When olive oil or walnuts are recommended as sources for omega-3 fatty acids, the people making the recommendations are talking about ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). ALA is the shortest of the long-chained omega-3s. The body can convert some ALA to the longer ones, but only a very small percentage gets converted, somewhere between 2 and 10% depending on the person.

Although there is no known cure for psoriasis there are many ways to soothe the itching and reduce the severity of the condition and make it more manageable. Here are some some of our top recommended remedies.
