You often hear SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts speak about backlinks. If you are a new webmaster, or more specifically new to optimizing your website for search engine optimization, then you might not understand what a backlink is. More importantly, you might not realize just how important they are to the search engines, namely Google, and how high your site will rank for its specific keywords. Backlinks are mainly a concern for webmasters that are relying on organic search traffic. This is free traffic that comes when someone searches for a keyword phrase that your site is relevant for. The higher you are on the first page of the search results, the greater the chance of the searcher clicking on your site and paying you a visit. Now how to get to the top is something that many new webmasters are confused about. And to make it worse, the so called experts will confuse you even more in an attempt to get you to purchase their "system" for ranking high. The single most important factor in ranking high is your backlinks. Simply put, a backlink is a hyperlink on another website that points back to your site, preferably with a targeted phrase. If your site is about shiny blue widgets, then it would be a good thing for you if other sites linked to you with the phrase "tiny blue widgets" or terms very similar. Backlinks are important because Google uses backlinks to your site as a "vote" of sorts. The quantity, and more importantly, the quality of the backlinks to your site will help Google to determine where your site should rank when a searcher queries a specific keyword phrase. How Do I Get Backlinks To My Site? Visit any internet marketing forum (actually, don't!) and you will find an endless debate on the best way to get backlinks to your site. Some well meaning, and some non-well meaning, folks will give you various schemes devised to help you get backlinks. First word of warning, if it sounds fishy or like something you shouldn't do, don't do it. Google is smart. They employ a lot of smart people. PhD's in fact, whose job it is is to provide their end user with a quality experience. Trying to trick them is not smart. It might work for a short time, but most likely they will figure it out, and when they do your site will suffer. One of the most popular and best long term strategies of building backlinks is through the use of article marketing. There are hundreds, if not thousands of article directories on the internet. Most of them are, simply put, rubbish! However, there are 5 or 6 very strong directories that you would be wise to submit your original, unique, helpful articles to. A simple query to a search engine of, "top 10 article directories" will provide you with the answers you need. Alternatively, you can find very high ranking authority sites in your industry and approach the owner offering to provide them with unique, helpful content that may be of interest to their readers. In exchange for this, they will let you include a targeted backlink to your site. Do not discount the power of this. Authority sites are looked upon very favorably by Google, and a legitimate, contextual link from one will be much more important than 100 links from low level article directories. While there is much more that can be said, the basics of backlinking your site have been covered above, and will give any new webmaster enough ammo to get started. Happy SEO'ing!
