Optimism is "an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome". [1] It is the philosophical opposite of pessimism. Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good, so that most situations work out in the end for the best. Alternatively, some optimists believe that regardless of the external world or situation, one should choose to feel good about it and make the most of it. This kind of optimism doesn't say anything about the quality of the external world; it's an internal optimism about one's own feelings.[citation needed] A common conundrum illustrates optimism-versus-pessimism with the question, does one regard a given glass of water, filled to half its capacity, as half full or as half empty? Conventional wisdom expects optimists to reply, "Half full," and pessimists to respond, "Half empty" (assuming that "full" is considered good, and "empty", bad). Another paradox sometimes associated with optimism is that the only thing an optimist cannot view as positive is a pessimist. Pessimism, however, as it acts as a check to recklessness, may even then be viewed in a positive light.

1. Health care bill's passage was most disappointing day of career
November 19, 2009
U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith says he's a "glass half-full" kind of guy. But as a $1.1 trillion health care reform plan passed the House of Representatives late Saturday night, he found it difficult to muster much optimism.
"Saturday was probably, in my 15 years in public office, my most discouraging day," Smith said in an interview with The Independent's editorial board on Friday. "I didn't feel good about the direction of America, and that this huge bureaucratic monstrosity was likely to prevail that evening."
Now, as the Senate considers its own version of the reform bill and the House ... (read more)

2. Stock Photography and the Timeless Image
November 16, 2009
I came up with what I thought was a great idea, a kind of positive spin on the old half-full, half empty glass theme. My idea was for a photograph of a hand holding up a glass with a rainbow in the background creating the illusion that the rainbow was pouring into the glass. A timeless concept stock photo illustrating success, optimism, positive thinking, and the way forward.
First I put the image up on Getty. They readily accepted it into their Stone collection. Good start. I waited for the checks to start rolling in. But nothing happened. I waited six months and finally a sale! My share... (read more)

3. Utilizing MLM Mailing Lists
November 16, 2009
MLM mailing lists may be the cause of more heartbreaks than any other single factor in mail order. A poorly chosen list, a weak mailing and the high cost of mailing to a list can shadow the optimism of a new marketer very quickly. That is why it is best to arm yourself with MLM mailing list knowledge before embarking on that path.
Whether or not you should use an MLM mailing list to sell your product or service depend on several things:
Is what you are offering too complex an offering to be explained in a 30-word ad?
Can you afford to mail 200 to 1,000 pieces on the chance t... (read more)

7. What's The Big Deal About Optimism Anyway?
November 05, 2009
By nature, human beings are impatient. We all want great things for ourselves and we don't want to wait too long to get them. Let's face it, this is a microwave society ? we don't want to wait around for anything.
When it takes longer than expected for goodness to materialize, frustration sets in.
For example, if you?ve ever placed second in a contest, are you the type of person to give up and not try again? Or, would you be OK with having fallen short and use the experience to push for better results the next time?
In life, you will be confronted daily with having to make one ... (read more)

9. SPOO (is the) KEY
October 27, 2009
SPOO(is the)KEY !
Halloween is when little kids (and sometimes not so little) kids find their favorite costume and step out to show others something about themselves.
Most costumes are really a reflection of all or a part of a dream of a child. We see super heroes, sports figures, princesses, Disney characters that the child dreams of. We also see some bums and hookers in the older children but let?s assume this isn?t their dream !
At adult costume parties you see mostly fun costumes because all too many adults have stopped dreaming. French maids, pink blow-up elephants, Franken... (read more)

10. Cautious Optimism!
October 22, 2009
Commodities so far this week have not changed much. But I can point out a few things for us to watch Thursday and Friday. Precious Metals – Gold GLD fund – Silver SLV Fund – PM Stocks GDX Fund We could start to see a shift between the price relationship between gold and the broad market. I pointed this out last week mentioning that gold and silver are starting to hold up in value while stocks sell off on big days. For example, Wednesday’s sell-off in equities did not have much effect on precious metals. This is what we want to see. It means money is moving out of stocks and into gold a... (read more)

15. Self Confidence, Mentors and Success
October 16, 2009
You can become self confident by doing three things. First, choose optimism. Believe in your heart of hearts that today will be better than yesterday, and that tomorrow will be better than today. Second, face your fears and act. Procrastination and inaction feed fear and rob you of self confidence. Action cures fear. Third, surround yourself with positive people. Don’t let the naysayers into your life. Hang around with people who are positive about themselves, their careers and life in general.

17. Using the expectant power of the brain to succeed
October 12, 2009
There are many examples of optimism and a positive attitude bringing positive results. In sport, huge swings of power are determined by positive and negative emotions. The same exists in everyday experiences, it's just that the scoreboard is not as defined.
Of course, blind optimism is dangerous too, and that's where goal setting works. It gives you the direction and the plan to achieve personal success, and combined with a little motivation and a positive attitude, there's just no stopping you!
How does attitude make a difference? Quite simply, if you believe in something enough, ... (read more)

The latest Government and independent figures may suggest that the worst of the recession is over, but for interim managers and other temporary and contract workers, there remain uncertain times ahead.

Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili (2nd L) with members of his delegation at opening of talks between Iran and six world powers in Geneva, 01 Oct 2009Thursday's talks between Western powers and Iran on Tehran's nuclear ambitions have sparked a mixed reaction. October 02, 2009
Along with warmer days, gentle rain showers, and robins' return to our lawns, dandelions are harbingers of spring. Their bright yellow flowers seem full of optimism and renewed life--as long as you do not have a lawn that is filled with them. Many people reach for the herbicide at the first signs of dark green, toothed leaves, yellow blossoms, and white puffballs. However, there is no need to resort to such drastic measures. 25. The Housing Market Forecast for 2009
October 02, 2009
Allow me to give you my thoughts on what the housing market forecast is for the remainder of 2009. So far this year, I have heard unbridled optimism from many hopeful sellers, agents, and investors, believing that the market and values cannot possibly stay down any longer. On the other hand, some experts and real estate professionals predict another Great Depression that will last 10 years or longer. They base this on the fact that the real estate bubble was allowed to grow so much larger than ever before, the ramifications of it popping have got to be all the more severe. I agree that the...
