Penicillin (sometimes abbreviated PCN or pen) is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi. [1] Penicillin antibiotics are historically significant because they are the first drugs that were effective against many previously serious diseases such as syphilis and Staphylococcus infections. Penicillins are still widely used today, though many types of bacteria are now resistant. All penicillins are Beta-lactam antibiotics and are used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms. The term "penicillin" can also refer to the mixture of substances that are naturally, and organically, produced.[2] The term "penam" is used to describe the core skeleton of a member of a penicillin antibiotic. This skeleton has the molecular formula R-C9H11N2O4S, where R is a variable side chain. The discovery of penicillin is attributed to Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming in 1928. He showed that, if Penicillium notatum was grown in the appropriate substrate, it would exude a substance with antibiotic properties, which he dubbed penicillin. This serendipitous observation began the modern era of antibiotic discovery. The development of penicillin for use as a medicine is attributed to the Australian Nobel laureate Howard Walter Florey together with the German Nobel laureate Ernst Chain and the English biochemist Norman Heatley.

1. MRSA What is it and how can we prevent it?
November 20, 2009
Methicillan-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It's a strain of Staph that's resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. MRSA is a "SUPERBUG" that can be fatal. What this means is that what once was a simple Staph infection that could be treated with penicillin type antibiotics, is now a disease that must be fought with super antibiotics like Vancomycin (Vancocin) and Linezolid (Zyvox), and others of that type. Staph bacteria can be found on the skin and in the noses of 30% of the population. If you have the bacteria, but are not sick, then it is said to be "colon... (read more)

14. Preventing Mold With Proper Insulation
July 27, 2009
Mold is all around us, all the time. It is part of Mother Nature's recycling program. It helps break down materials, speeding their decay and return to the earth from which they came. Without certain molds we wouldn't have bread to eat, beer to enjoy, or cheese to fondue. Medicine wouldn't have penicillin or any other antibiotic that ends in "mycin" without mold. So, without it, life on earth as we know it would be pretty unbalanced and boring.
Why, then, do we hate it so?

15. Penicillin and alcohol
July 21, 2009
Penicillin is one of the world's favorite drugs. The reason for this can be given as the immense effectiveness of the drug in a very short period of time. Penicillin is derived from Penicillium notatum, a mold. This very effective drug can be used by any person unless he is allergic to it. There are certain differences between penicillin and most other drugs. One such difference is that unlike most other drugs, penicillin is able to work even after a person consumes alcohol. This is because alcohol has nothing to do with bacterial infection or with the method of action (MOA) of penicillin. ... (read more)

16. Difference between amoxicillin & penicillin
July 21, 2009
The difference between amoxicillin as well as penicillin is seen chemically in the accumulation of an amino group to amoxicillin making it polar. This also allows it to penetrate the gram-negative bacteria effectively. The difference in amoxicillin is active in respect to the broad spectrum of bacteria. It is also soluble in comparison to penicillin G. hence amoxicillin can be given orally as it is absorbs better. Amoxicillin as well as penicillin both are identical forms and penicillin helps in curing the infections of the gram positive bacteria, while amoxicillin is useful in curing gram pos... (read more)
