Pentecost ( Ancient Greek pe?t???st? [ ?µ??a], pentekoste [hemera], "the fiftieth day") is one of the prominent feasts in the Christian liturgical year. The feast is also called Whitsun, Whitsunday, Whit Sunday, and Whitsuntide, especially in the United Kingdom. Pentecost is celebrated seven weeks (49 days) after Easter Sunday, hence its name. [1] Pentecost falls on the tenth day after Ascension Thursday. Historically and symbolically related to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God giving the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai fifty days after the Exodus, Pentecost now also commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus as described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2 in the New Testament. For this reason, Pentecost is sometimes described as "the Church's birthday". The Pentecostal movement of Christianity derives its name from this biblical event. The biblical narrative of Pentecost is given in the second chapter of the Book of Acts. As recounted in Acts 21-4 (CEV)

1. What About Pentecost? by Rodney Howard Brown
September 15, 2009
MY TREASURE Foundation Scriptures : Matthew 6:19-24 Dr. This is one of his many inspiring messages : WHAT ABOUT PENTECOST? what is in a name? Some say that'Pentecost' means 50. Technically they are correct, but to each Spirit-filled child of Our Lord God it means massively more than a mere technical definition. When we buy Sterling silver we know that we are obtaining a certain definite standard of silverware. We know it has value. We also know there are cheap imitations on the market, and if we are searching for quality we know enough to let such invalid articles alone. Pentecost... (read more)

2. The Power of The Holy Spirit
March 05, 2009
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Acts 1:8
After Pentecost, the church experienced great change. We see Peter preaching, healing, but hey! This is not the first time that the disciples healed and performed great miracles. When the Lord sent the 12 and them the 70. The gospels say that they healed the sick, rebuked devils, resurrected the death and preached the good news of the kingdom. They were amazed of how the illness ... (read more)

3. Saved by Faith or Saved by Holy Spirit Baptism - Which Is It?
January 20, 2009
Is a man saved by faith or saved by Holy Spirit baptism? I personally do not believe either but there are many advocates of one or the other. (Yes, I believe faith is essential but just not that it is the final step to salvation.) There are a number of people in what is commonly called the Christian community who are thoroughly convinced that one is saved by Holy Spirit baptism. I do not believe they are in the majority but they are out there nonetheless. The case of Cornelius and his household as found in Act 10 is where most of the difficulty arises. People feel that when t... (read more)

4. Sin Against Peter
January 12, 2009
The apostle Peter has taken a beating among denominationalists. I would feel sorry for him save for the fact that I would be feeling for the wrong party seeing as how he was an inspired apostle of God and his antagonists are but mere flesh and blood men and totally uninspired. It was not always the way it is today. For at least a few hundred years after his sermon in Acts 2 he was honored by those who proclaimed faith in God and belief in Christ as the Son of God. Today, however, men who claim Christianity pretty much just ignore his sermon that day for they do not like what he said an... (read more)

5. Why Men Today Cannot Be Saved Like The Thief On The Cross?
December 02, 2008
I recently had an individual ask the question that if baptism is essential for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38) then why did not Jesus tell the rich young ruler? (This individual does not believe what Peter taught on the subject in Acts 2 where Peter makes baptism essential to salvation.) It is the wrong question to ask. Why? Because when Jesus was talking to the rich young ruler he was not talking to you and me. The only lessons in the account of the rich young ruler that could be made applicable to us is (1) a man may be very religious but lost and (2) the danger of having a hidden i... (read more)

6. The Case of Cornelius and the Holy Spirit
November 12, 2008
There are many who believe beyond doubt that Cornelius was saved at the time the Holy Spirit came upon him and his household. It is a topic that ought to be discussed. While I have written once before on this subject more needs to be said as there has been some objection to what was written.
I know of no person who claims to be a Christian who would deny the fact that the very first gospel sermon ever preached after Christ's death, burial, and resurrection was in the city of Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost as recorded in Acts chapter two. Neither do I know a man who would deny but wh... (read more)

9. Is Speaking in Tongues a gift from God?
August 12, 2006
Speaking in Tongues as we see it today in Christian churches is a relatively new phenomenon dating back to the early 1900’s.
Why is this? And in fact is what we are seeing today the same gift that empowered Jesus’ disciples at Pentecost?
The disciples were given the essential ability to speak in the languages of the surrounding nations, so that they could preach the gospel in the native tongue of all those they met. If what we see in churches today is the same gift, why was it absent from the church for over 1800 years?
Throughout the Bible it is seen that God gave His people ... (read more)

10. Pope Benedict Calls For True Religious Freedom
June 03, 2006
A colorful and enthusiastic crowd made up of members of more than 100 religious movements welcomed the pope in Saint Peter's Square waving flags and chanting. Some 350,000 people packed the square and neighboring streets.
Pope Benedict thanked them for turning up so numerous for a prayer service on the eve of Pentecost. In his homily, the pope encouraged those present to make their faith clear to others.
He told them that he who has known something true, beautiful and good in life should run to share it around everywhere, in family and in work, in all the places of one's existence

11. The Oracles of God
January 29, 2006
Just what do you mean "the oracles of God?" And is the sacred calendar a part of them? There are only four places in the New Testament that speak of the oracles of God: Acts 7:38 reveals that Moses received "the lively oracles to give unto us."Rom. 3:2 states, without apology, that "the oracles of God" were COMMITTED TO THE JEWS. Heb. 5:12 speaks of "the first principles of the oracles of God" and 1 Pet. 4:11 states that those whom God has gifted to speak should "speak as the oracles of God." All of these examples use the Greek word logion (Strong's Concordance #3051) that means an... (read more)
