November 19, 2009
Think of the history of earrings and you would think that ear piercing would have been around since the 1960's. In fact it's a lot longer, try 2000 B.C. This article looks at its history and finds out why our ancestors wanted body modification.
Earrings are a form of body modification and unbelievably it's been around for 4000 years. 2. Oriental and Persian Rugs: How are They Manufactured
November 16, 2009
There are four ways by which an Oriental and Persian rug is made. Nomads, peasants, small workshops and factories. As for the knots, it exists two distinct kinds of knots: the Persian asymmetric knot and the Turkish symmetrical knots. Nomads use primitive tools which they can transport with them wherever they travel. These tools are simply made out of two horizontal sticks which are held down on the ground by pegs, on which strings are mounted as a base for the making of both Oriental and Persian Rugs. These sticks can be dismounted to be carried from place to place, as the nomadic li... (read more)

5. Learn about History of Ghazal
November 05, 2009
Ghazal originated in Iran in the 10th century AD It grew from the Persian qasida, which in verse form had come to Iran from Arabia. The qasida was a panegyric written in praise of the emperor or his noblemen. The part of the qasida called tashbib got detached and developed in due course of time into the Ghazal. Whereas the qasida sometimes ran into as many as 100 couplets or more in monorhyme, the Ghazal seldom exceeded twelve, and settled down to an average of seven. Because of its comparative brevity and concentration, its thematic variety and rich suggestiveness, the Ghazal soon eclipsed th... (read more)

6. What to look out for when buying Oriental Rugs on Holiday?
November 05, 2009
Many people go on holiday to places where rugs are woven and it is part of the experience to go to the market to buy a rug. Over the years I have been called out many times to assess and value rugs bought in the Middle East, North Africa or India and more recently China, for insurance purposes or to sell.
With regard to price generally speaking you pay pretty close or even more for the rug abroad than you would in the UK. However many rugs bought abroad are of a lower quality and would not reach the shops back home. Often rugs have weak sides that come apart after a few months which can... (read more)

Moths are attracted to places which are dark, undisturbed and damp. They lay eggs in protein based fibres, i.e. wool, silk and fur. The eggs are small and translucent and difficult to see. Pashmina is a fabric which became famous in the West since many years. It is used mainly in scarves and shawls as it is very warm and soft. The word is the derivative of the word pashm, a Persian word, which means the undercoat of fur on most of the animals; in this case, it is the goat.

13. Hand Made Persian Rugs
October 27, 2009
The carpets were born out of necessity. Nomadic tribes needed to protect themselves from cold and sometimes damp or dirty grounds so they covered them with hand worked carpets. Those covering were flat weave, they were light and easy to transport. They were also used as blankets, cloths and drapery. Why buy a hand made carpet instead of machine made one? The difference in quality and beauty is stag rent. Hand made carpets are more durable than machine made rugs. They last for centuries if good care is taken. October 26, 2009
If you look at an oriental weaving (rug, bags, pillow covers etc) from the 19thC you will notice that the colours have an attractive depth and richness about them. Natural dyes produce a vast range of colours that have a remarkable ability to harmonize with each other. Research into the chemistry of these dyes has shown that in the case of reds from the Madder root these is a cocktail of at least 40 active pigments present in varying degrees.
The relative percentages of each depends on many factors such as the mineral content of the soil, the age of the root, the dying temperature, and t... (read more)

17. Calico Cats - Rare and Beautiful
October 22, 2009
Calico is not a breed, but a name for cats with a specific coat pattern. Calico cats are those which have fur in three colors: white, black and orange. They appear in many different breeds, including Manx, Persian, and domestic short-hair cats.
Calico cats are mostly female. This is explained by genetics – the color of the coat is tightly connected to sex. It depends upon the X chromosome, which in the case of cats, is coded to give either orange or black fur. The white color comes from other genes. As females have two X chromosomes, they have the opportunity to obtain one “orange” and ... (read more)

October 14, 2009
'The world is a rose, smell it and pass it on', Persian proverb.
Roses are the world's favorite flower and this is demonstrated by the size of the global market for rose bushes and cut flowers. They were first cultivated in China some 5,000 years ago and then during the Middle Ages in Europe, they were cultivated in monasteries for their medicinal properties.
Roses are often attributed with a reputation for being difficult to grow; this is only true when gardeners don't understand the roses' preferences. Once we appreciate and then supply their needs, they can be very accommodatin... (read more)

The idiom algorithm is extracted from the name of the 9th century Persian mathematician Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Musa al-Khwarizmi. 24. What to do if your oriental rugs are in a flood?
October 08, 2009
Just because your oriental rug has become very wet does not necessarily mean that it is damaged. Often when they are professionally cleaned they use water based soaps. Recently I rescued a collection of rugs from a flood and only one of the 9 rugs was damaged, where the colours had run, which could only partially be remedied. The others were fine and none the worse for the event. The first thing to do is at the first chance to dry them out. Very often when a rug is wet it looks uneven and does not lie flat, that is OK it usually goes back when completely dry. If the weather permits put it out... (read more)
