Petroleum ( L. petroleum < Gr. pet???a??? lit. "rock oil" was first used in the treatise De re metallica published in 1556 by the German mineralogist Georg Bauer, known as Georgius Agricola. [1]) is a naturally occurring, flammable liquid found in rock formations in the Earth consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, plus other organic compounds. The proportion of hydrocarbons in the mixture is highly variable and ranges from as much as 97% by weight in the lighter oils to as little as 50% in the heavier oils and bitumens. The hydrocarbons in crude oil are mostly alkanes, cycloalkanes and various aromatic hydrocarbons while the other organic compounds contain nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, and trace amounts of metals such as iron, nickel, copper and vanadium. The exact molecular composition varies widely from formation to formation but the proportion of chemical elements vary over fairly narrow limits as follows[2] Crude oil varies greatly in appearance depending on its composition. It is usually black or dark brown (although it may be yellowish or even greenish). In the reservoir it is usually found in association with natural gas, which being lighter forms a gas cap over the petroleum, and saline water which being heavier generally floats underneath it. Crude oil may also be found in semi-solid form mixed with sand, as in the Athabasca oil sands in Canada, where it may be referred to as crude bitumen.

2. Synthetic Blend Motor Oil - A Good Compromise
August 22, 2008
One of the factors that keeps people from using synthetic oil in their car or truck is the cost. Synthetic oils are generally more expensive than petroleum-based oils due to the extra refining and lab work that goes into their development. While this extra processing usually translates into an oil that can be used for longer intervals in your before it requires a change, the initial cost can still sometimes seem like too much of a barrier.
For this reason, many companies offer what is termed a synthetic blend motor oil. This type of oil contains a mixture of up to 30 percent synthetic ... (read more)

The effect of the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries can be likened to the effect of the information technology revolution today. It created new industries and new skills that changed the way people lived. Yet, both periods in history also had their share of negative impact: pollution. The industrial revolution saw an increase in use of petroleum products and chemical compounds that seeped into the ground, polluting water and soil. IT indus... (read more)

11. Designer Fabric or Plastic: What are you wearing today?
August 06, 2008
Petroleum or old water bottles – which would you prefer on your body?
Recent independent research shows that up to 90% of mainstream women’s clothing contains polyester or fleece – both being synthetic fibres formed upon a chemical reaction between an acid and alcohol. By definition, polyester is a type of plastic originally derived from coal, air, water and petroleum. As a clothing fabric, it is cheap, quick, and easy, and so most commercially-sold clothes are now made of this man-made material.
Unfortunately, since polyester is largely petroleum-based, environmentally-... (read more)

15. Is OPEC Losing It?
July 31, 2008
IS OPEC LOSING IT?
Earlier in the summer the president of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Chakib Khelil attacked the biofuels industry by claiming that ethanol is responsible for 40 percent of the rise in oil prices. Mr. Khelil still has not offered an explanation for his bizarre claim, despite a very public counter attack by the world’s four largest ethanol lobbies.
Let’s consider the facts. One thing is undeniable: Biofuels add to the world's fuel supply -- and one needs only to have sat through the first day of Economics 101 to understand that basics of s... (read more)

16. Sinopec sees limited benefits from recent oil price declines
July 30, 2008
Sinopec, the listed refining unit of the China Petroleum and Chemical Corp., hasn't really benefited from recent declines in global crude oil prices, because its refining costs still far exceed domestic oil product prices, company officials said on Thursday. China caps refined oil product prices at relatively low levels by world standards. The officials said that although lower world prices would reduce import costs, global crude prices were still about 130 U.S. dollars per barrel, well above the break-even point of 80 U.S. dollars for Asia's largest oil refiner. Sinopec imports about... (read more)

21. Where does gasoline come from?
July 15, 2008
Gasoline is made from crude oil. The crude oil pumped out of the ground is a black liquid called petroleum. This liquid contains hydrocarbons, and the carbon atoms in crude oil link together in chains of different lengths. It turns out that hydrocarbon molecules of different lengths have different properties and behaviors. For example, a chain with just one carbon atom in it (CH4) is the lightest chain, known as methane. Methane is a gas so light that it floats like helium. As the chains get longer, they get heavier. The first four chains -- CH4 (methane), C2H6 (ethane), C3H8 (propan... (read more)
