Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Photosynthesis is a metabolic pathway that converts light energy into chemical energy. Its initial substrates are carbon dioxide and water; the energy source is sunlight (electromagnetic radiation); and the end-products are oxygen and (energy-containing) carbohydrates, such as sucrose, glucose or starch. This process is one of the most important biochemical pathways,[1] since nearly all life on Earth either directly or indirectly depends on it as a source of energy. It is a complex process occurring in plants, algae, as well as bacteria such as cyanobacteria. Photosynthetic organisms are also referred to as photoautotrophs.[1]

The word comes from the Greek f?t?- (photo-), "light," and s???es?? (synthesis), "placing with."

Photosynthesis uses light energy and carbon dioxide to make triose phosphates (G3P). G3P is generally considered the first end-product of photosynthesis.[citation needed] It can be used as a source of metabolic energy, or combined and rearranged to form monosaccharide or disaccharide sugars, such as glucose or sucrose, respectively, which can be transported to other cells, stored as insoluble polysaccharides such as starch, or converted to structural carbohydrates, such as cellulose or glucans.

A commonly used slightly simplified equation for photosynthesis is

1. Finding The Grow lights System Appropriate for Your Indoor Garden Application
August 26, 2008

Indoor gardens can be tricky when figuring out the correct lighting cycle to ensure your plants lasting happiness and prosperity. Grow lights are electric lamps that are designed to encourage healthy plant growth by emitting electromagnetic radiation that provides the right conditions for the plant to undergo photosynthesis. This emitted light spectrum is much like that which comes from the sun, except that because it comes from a light, the plant does not need natural sunlight or even to be outdoors in order to benefit from it. Did you know that the lighting that comes from natural da... (read more)

2. How do hydroponic systems benefit plant growth
April 22, 2008

Indoor growing permits the gardener to entirely master the growing conditions. All of the nutrients your plants call for to grow must be provided by your indoor hydroponic arrangement. Lighting, heat, oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, and plant food should be looked at prior to commencing the set up of your growing organization. Plants metabolise carbon dioxide and H2O to make required energy through the function of photosynthesis. Light is key because it supplies the energy required for this transition. The concentration of the light has been found to boost the measure of energy made. This wi... (read more)

3. Biomass Renewable sources of energy
April 09, 2008

Biomass is macrobiotic matter prepared from plants and animals. Biomass includes stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun's energy in a method called photosynthesis. The chemical energy in plants gets transferred on to the animals and people that eat them, all in a form of a big chain reaction biologically. Biomass is a renewable energy source since as we grow more trees and crops, more waste will always be there to renew. Some examples of biomass fuels are wood, crops, manure, and some garbage. Smoldering biomass is not the only way to let loose its energy. Biomass can be transf... (read more)

4. Are the Colors of Light in a Photo Rejuvenation or a Photo Facial device important?
March 28, 2008

In a word, yes. I have stated in previous articles that companies who make photo-rejuvenation devices use “certain kinds of light” in their products. The color choices are not random nor are they used because they look good. There are actual reasons why you see the colors you see LED photo rejuvenation lights. In another article I recently wrote I used photosynthesis in plants as an analogy to illustrate why photo-rejuvenation devices works. I’d like to carry the plant analogy a little further to address this question. I find it fascinating that when it comes to the metabolism ... (read more)

5. How is Oil Formed - Crude Oil is Solar Power
February 11, 2008

Oil and Natural gas are among the most valuable and sought after natural resources being used today. Crude Oil is the organic compound harvested from the Earth that is used to make all forms of petroleum products. Refineries convert most crude oil into energy producing compounds such as gasoline, diesel fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel, and heating gases such as propane. However, a surprising amount of everyday products also contain petroleum components. This long list includes deodorant, plastics, inks, eyeglasses, tires, paraffin wax, lubricants, cleaning products, heart valves, a... (read more)

7. Hydroponics Gardening with LED Grow Lights
December 24, 2007

Hydroponics gardening requires powerful grow lights to provide light to the plants adequetely in order for photosynthesis to occur. For the plants to grow and thrive, lighting is crucial. Every kind of indoor gardening situation, requires adequate light and without it the plants will be stunted and not grow to their full potential. LED grow lights can be used to good effect in an indoor plant growing situation. LED refers to light-emitting diode. A diode has two terminals, and it allows current to flow in one direction and not in another. It is a simple semiconductor. Photons a... (read more)

8. FLOATING FOUNTAINS AND AERATORS
December 24, 2007

Algae is natural in your pond. And it is beneficial, as it provides a food source; in fact, pond owners who desire to raise trophy bass sometimes fertilize their ponds to keep planktonic algae production high. But algae poses several problems, too. For one thing, too much of certain kinds of algae is plain ugly. For another, too much algae is unhealthy. Photosynthesis requires sunlight, and algae blocks it. If your pond has too much plant life, the oxygen levels can decrease to the point that large fish struggle to live. The Problem of Algae Blooms An algae bloom is a rapid repro... (read more)

10. What Makes a Good Grow Light
September 28, 2007

The determining factor for a good grow light is one that provides the correct amount and type of light for the plant being grown as well as its during different stages of development. Plants of course use light as an energy source, which it converts into chemical energy by means of photosynthesis. In an indoor garden this requirement is met through grow lights. The amount that a plant grows and provides is directly dependent on the amount of light available to it. Because light is so important to plant health (upon which everything else depends!), the purchase of grow lights requires a ... (read more)

12. Beta Carotene's Benefits In Human Health
June 13, 2007

Beta Carotene is a carotenoid . Carotenoids are light absorbing pigments occurring in plants and animals. Beta carotene stores light in plant leaves during the process of photosynthesis. Found in many plants including asparagus, apricots, broccoli, carrots, kale, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and tomatoes; it can easily be added to the diet naturally. This carotenoid can absorb light wavelengths that evade chlorophyll. This can help to increase the range of usable light waves during photosynthesis. It also helps the plant reach for the light unless the light is too severe then it sends... (read more)
