A pigment is a material that changes the color of light it reflects as the result of selective color absorption. This physical process differs from fluorescence, phosphorescence, and other forms of luminescence, in which the material itself emits light. Many materials selectively absorb certain wavelengths of light. Materials that humans have chosen and developed for use as pigments usually have special properties that make them ideal for coloring other materials. A pigment must have a high tinting strength relative to the materials it colors. It must be stable in solid form at ambient temperatures. For industrial applications, as well as in the arts, permanence and stability are desirable properties. Pigments that are not permanent are called fugitive. Fugitive pigments fade over time, or with exposure to light, while some eventually blacken.

8. Disorders of Skin Pigmentation And Complexion
November 07, 2008
Color of the human skin is due to melanin, the black brown pigment, which is produced by melanocytes in the skin. Changes in pigment level are perceived as changes in skin color, which may be seen both as a loss of color (de-pigmentation), or as an excessive accumulation of pigment (hyper-pigmentation). Such changes in pigmentation may come through as simple influences as the amount of sun exposure, but they are a source of extreme distress when they are due to disease simply because they bring the added distress of having a disease.

10. What isVitiligo
November 06, 2008
Vitiligo or leukoderma is a skin condition characterized by the appearance of white patches or blotches on the skin that can appear on any part of the body; this is as a result of the death of the (melanocytes) cells that produce our skin pigment (Melanin) .The condition can vary from just one or two white spots to large areas of completely de-pigmented skin. When the melanocytes die, the cells that form the skin appear white, and this causes what is now known as Vitiligo. The disease is more common in people who have a family history of certain auto immune diseases such as diabetes, hyperthy... (read more)

16. Detailed Information on Melanoma
October 18, 2008
Melanoma is the most risky type of skin cancer. Melanoma is a malignant tumor of melanocytes which are found predominantly in skin but also in the bowel and the eye. It is due to wild growth of pigment cells, called melanocytes. Melanin also protects the deeper layers of the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV). Melanoma is most common in white skinned individuals, but it may rarely develop in those with dark skin as well. About one in fifteen white skinned New Zealanders are expected to develop melanoma in their lifetime. Melanoma can occur in adults of any age but is very rare in chi... (read more)

20. What is Your Baby Like at 22 Weeks Pregnant?
August 22, 2008
At 22 weeks pregnant, you are just about at the end of the second stage or trimester of your pregnancy. The baby is now just over a pound in weight and measures almost eleven inches long from the top of its head to its heels. If you were to be able to actually see the baby at this stage, the skin would be quite wrinkly even though the facial features are developed. This is because the baby needs to gain weight now and fill out more. You would not be able to see what color eyes you baby has because the pigment in the irises is not yet developed. The inner organs are still developing and the pan... (read more)

21. What Is Jaundice
August 22, 2008
Jaundice is a result of buildup in the blood of the bilirubin, a yellow pigment that comes from the breakdown of older red blood cells. It's normal for the red blood cells to break down, although the bilirubin formed doesn't normally cause jaundice because the liver will metabolize it and then get rid of it in the gut.
However, the newborn baby will often become jaundiced during the first few days due to the liver enzyme that metabolizes the bilirubin becoming relatively immature. Therefore, newborn babies will have more red blood cells than adults, and thus more will break down at any g... (read more)

24. Anti-Aging and Hyper Pigmentation by Carson Danfield
July 17, 2008
Hyper pigmentation of the skin can make you look older than your years and there are two main causes of this condition where the pigment changes and areas of color appear as freckles and spots on various parts of the face and the body.
The first and obvious cause is the sun - that villain of the skin that causes more aging problems than anything else. The sun will not only affect the face but also other areas that are prone to more exposure such as the hands and upper areas of the chest.
Good SPF sunscreens will help a lot and also by keeping out of the sun when it is at its most da... (read more)

25. Enter the Divine: Azurite
July 15, 2008
Yet another semi-precious stone, the azurite is a basic copper carbonate mineral that is azure blue in color. It is also known as chessylite. The name of this gemstone has been derived from "lazaward" which is a Persian word and from "azura" which is a Latin word, both meaning blue sky.
