Plant hormones (also known as phytohormones) are chemicals that regulate plant growth. Plant hormones are signal molecules produced within the plant, and occur in extremely low concentrations. Hormones regulate cellular processes in targeted cells locally and when moved to other locations, in other locations of the plant. Plants, unlike animals, lack glands that produce and secrete hormones. Plant hormones shape the plant, affecting seed growth, time of flowering, the sex of flowers, senescence of leaves and fruits. They affect which tissues grow upward and which grow downward, leaf formation and stem growth, fruit development and ripening, plant longevity and even plant death. Hormones are vital to plant growth and lacking them, plants would be mostly a mass of undifferentiated cells.

The word hormone is derived from Greek and means 'set in motion.' They are naturally produced within plants, though very similar chemicals are produced by fungi and bacteria that can effect plant growth.[1] Also a large number of related chemical compounds synthesized in the laboratory by humans that can function as hormones are called Plant Growth Regulators, or PGRs for short. At the beginning of the study of plant hormones, "phytohormone" was the commonly-used term, but its use is less widely applied now.

Plant hormones are not nutrients, but chemicals that in small amounts promote and influence the growth,[2] development and differentiation of cells and tissues. The biosynthesis of plant hormones within plant tissues is often diffuse and not always localized, because, unlike animals, which have two circulatory systems (lymphatic and cardiovascular) powered by a heart that move fluids around the body, plants use more passive means to move chemicals around the plant. Plants utilize simple chemical hormones that move more easily through the plant's tissues. They are often produced on a local basis within the plant body, plant cells even produce hormones that effect different regions of cell producing the hormone.

Hormones are transported within the plant by utilizing four types of movements. For localized movement, cytoplasmic streaming within cells and slow diffusion of ions and molecules between cells are utilized. Vascular tissues are used to move hormones from one part of the plant to another, these include sieve tubes that move sugars from the leaves to the roots and flowers, and xylem that moves water and mineral solutes from the roots to the foliage.

1. Chickweed is a Star
May 19, 2008

Snowdrops and crocus flowers herald the spring. And if you look in between them, with luck, you'll see a bright green creeping plant low to the ground with little white starry flowers: chickweed, a good friend of mine. I say she's a star, because her botanical name - Stellaria media - means little stars. And because she really stars at helping us when we need to gently dissolve something or to cool off inflamed tissues. Chickweed not only effects physical health, she is a psychic healer too. She opens us up to cosmic energies and gives us the inner strength we need to handle those energie... (read more)

2. Make your own special rooting hormone.
April 25, 2008

When starting a new plant from a leaf or stem cutting, the cutting will be more likely to form roots and create a new plant if a rooting hormone is used. While commercial rooting hormone can be used there are organic homemade versions that work as well. To make rooting hormone soak the yellow-tipped shoots of a weeping willow tree in water. A tea made from the bark of a willow tree is also effective. When using the shoots or bark soak them for 24 hours prior to using. Some people have found that using honey makes an effective rooting hormone as well. Leaf ... (read more)

4. Finding the right Dental Products
April 13, 2008

When it comes to dental whitening products (and many other things), people often make the mistake of assuming that simply because it’s “natural” or derived from an “organic” source that it is somehow “safe.” Salicylate – a natural plant-based hormone derived from white willow and meadowsweet – has been used for centuries for its anti-septic and fever-reducing properties, but it can be harmful in large doses, and even fatal to those who are allergic to it. Dental products such as salicylate free toothpaste and dental whitening products are safer and more appropriate to such individuals. ... (read more)

October 21, 2007

Breast enhancement dietary supplements usually contain herbs (like Ginkgo (a.k.a. Gingko Biloba)), with natural estrogenic properties from plant sources (phyto-estrogens) that work by regulating hormones and promote healthy tissue growth. The herbs found in breast enhancement formulas do not usually contain estrogen or other hormones. However, they do contain hormone-like substances. One common type is called a phyto-estrogen, that can mimic the activity of human hormones such as estrogen or progesterone, or make proper levels of such hormones more available in the body by normalizing gl...
