Novel&_160;· Poem&_160;· Drama
Short story&_160;· NovellaPoetry, and discussions of it, have a long history. Early attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song, and comedy.[1] Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from prose.[2] From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more loosely defined as a fundamental creative act using language.[3] Poetry often uses particular forms and conventions to suggest alternative meanings in the words, or to evoke emotional or sensual responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony, and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly, metaphor, simile, and metonymy[4] create a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm. Some forms of poetry are specific to particular cultures and genres, responding to the characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. While readers accustomed to identifying poetry with Dante, Goethe, Mickiewicz and Rumi may think of it as being written in rhyming lines and regular meter, there are traditions, such as Biblical poetry, that use other approaches to achieve rhythm and euphony. Much of modern British and American poetry is to some extent a critique of poetic tradition,[5] playing with and testing (among other things) the principle of euphony itself, to the extent that sometimes it deliberately does not rhyme or keep to set rhythms at all.[6][7][8] In today's globalized world, poets often borrow styles, techniques and forms from diverse cultures and languages.

1. Truly Unique yet Flawed: Emerald Rings
November 20, 2009
Green is a solace a promise of peace a fort against the cold (William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), U.S. poet. Burning the Christmas Greens (l. 41-44). . . Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, The Richard Ellmann and Robert O'Clair, eds. (2d ed., 1988) W. W. Norton & Company.) Notice your otherwise dull backyard or those pretty flowers from your balcony or window, after a nice refreshing shower outside. A vivifying downpour stimulates life into that dusty backyard, bringing that stirring into that grapevine near the corner stone.
The lush green youthful rejuvenation is what is needed ... (read more)

2. Adriano Bulla, 'Heaven from Hell', the poems few dare to understand
November 16, 2009
The recent publication of 'Crosswords' in 'Autumn Leaves' has reminded us of a poet who, for unknown reasons, had disappeared from the poetic scene for four years: Adriano Bulla. This recent poem shows the same intensity of imagery and mastery of tropes his previous work has been noted for; a childhood memory becomes a poem in iambic pentameters where the function of caesura and internal half-rhyme is highlighted by symply splitting the pentameters in two, while a series of images produced by the juvenile speaker's mind project themselves on "monolithic stares" like a tyrannical sun, "phantasm... 4. Sylvia Plath - Poet, Novelist, American Icon
November 12, 2009
Discussing with my wife the quality education that women get in women's colleges, Mary Patricia pointed out to Wellesley producing Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Smith College Sylvia Plath. Of Mrs. Clinton we know a lot, but of Sylvia Plath we know less.
Sylvia Plath attended Smith from 1950-1955, and graduated summa cum laude, wining a Fulbright Scholarship to Cambridge. There she met poet Ted Hughes, whom she later married.
Not only was she talented poet but also an essayist and a fine novelist. In all genres she displayed a dark streak for brooding, melancholy, and self destruction. Her ... (read more)

5. Who is to be blamed?
November 12, 2009
I found it very depressing and rather tragic on face book, some young new generation kids making fun of the great poet and philosopher Dr. Iqbal. It’s really is something very disgraceful and sorrowful for us to see what our new generation is learning. I grew up reading “Lab Pe Aati…” ,Bachhey ki dua by Allama Iqbal in school. Most of his writings are devoted to revival of Islam and deliver this message very movingly in his poetical works too. The vision of having a segregated State for Indo Pak Muslims was first put by him in his Allahabad address. The ninth of November marks birth day... (read more)

6. Sapphire Rings - Secret Information for Buying One!
November 01, 2009
Beauty is but a vain and doubtful good; a shining gloss that fadeth suddenly; a flower that dies when it begins to bud; a doubtful good, a gloss, a glass, a flower, lost, faded, broken, dead within an hour. - William Shakespeare (1564-1616, British Poet, Playwright, Actor)
To simplify this very line, by the greatest novelist, belonging to Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare, has termed beauty as a mortal phase in various elements of life. Nature’s life forms have been bestowed with a limited time period into which they exist, and perish. Nevertheless, there is always an exception to this d... (read more)

7. 14 New Ways to Man Up
October 28, 2009
1. Bring a dish. Poet Robert Frost once wrote, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’ That's irony, not prescription. A real man hits the neighborhood barbeque bearing a bowl of potato salad. You won't just fill bellies, you'll strengthen bonds.
2. Pet her damn dog. Sure, it's yapping at you like you're about to steal the china, and a Frisbee toss could break its face. But it's not like we're asking you to take Fifi out for a walk or anything. Just hide some bacon in your pocket.
3. Mow your neighbor’s verge. You're already out there. Guaranteed, he won't care about property lines.

9. How To Begin Your Fiction: Classic Sentence Openers
October 19, 2009
Let philosophers look for the substance that underlies all of creation. Let mathematicians and physicists construct axioms and build a cosmos and so interpret reality. Let linguists search for the Adamic language-but let master writers be free.
The fiction writer must be free to explore the depths of humanity. D. H. Lawrence said, "Being a novelist, I consider myself superior to the saint, the scientist, the philosopher and the poet. The novel is the one bright book of life."
Yet, as disparate and chaotic as fine writers might seem to be, we can see that there's some method to their ma... (read more)

September 26, 2009
Abbie Cornish as Fanny Brawne and Ben Whishaw as John Keats in Jane Campion's "Bright Star"The passionate romance of poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne - one of English literature's greatest (and perhaps least-known) love stories - plays out in exquisite detail in the new film by Oscar-winning writer/director Jane Campion. It begins in 1818 when 23-year-old struggling poet John Keats moves into a house near Hampstead Heath in North London. His next-door neighbor is a captivating, outspoken 18-year-old: Fanny Brawne. 17. How To Understand Poetry
September 24, 2009
A first critical step in understanding poetry is to support the idea that the words on the page that form the poem are words that have come alive as a living entity. Though a poem is not a full expression of something the writer thinks or feels it is a journey, through itself in a sense to an ending or a climax. A poem is about a starting out, a commencement of a journey, and although the writer may have a theme that he starts out on this journey with. Generally the poet is unaware where they are going and are finding or searching way to get there. This is one of the key pleasures... (read more)
