Novel&_160;· Poem&_160;· Drama
Short story&_160;· NovellaPoetry, and discussions of it, have a long history. Early attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song, and comedy.[1] Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from prose.[2] From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more loosely defined as a fundamental creative act using language.[3] Poetry often uses particular forms and conventions to suggest alternative meanings in the words, or to evoke emotional or sensual responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony, and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly, metaphor, simile, and metonymy[4] create a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm. Some forms of poetry are specific to particular cultures and genres, responding to the characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. While readers accustomed to identifying poetry with Dante, Goethe, Mickiewicz and Rumi may think of it as being written in rhyming lines and regular meter, there are traditions, such as Biblical poetry, that use other approaches to achieve rhythm and euphony. Much of modern British and American poetry is to some extent a critique of poetic tradition,[5] playing with and testing (among other things) the principle of euphony itself, to the extent that sometimes it deliberately does not rhyme or keep to set rhythms at all.[6][7][8] In today's globalized world, poets often borrow styles, techniques and forms from diverse cultures and languages.

November 19, 2009
Poetess, author, and activist Emma Lazarus was being mentored by Ralph Waldo Emerson about 100 years before her direct descendant, cartoonist/writer/entrepreneur Rick London was born. When she died at age thirty-eight she hadn't a clue that the last verse in her poem "The New Colossus" would be engraved into the entrance of the Statue Of Liberty.
The last sentence in the poem is the best known: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the gold... (read more)

8. Who is to be blamed?
November 12, 2009
I found it very depressing and rather tragic on face book, some young new generation kids making fun of the great poet and philosopher Dr. Iqbal. It’s really is something very disgraceful and sorrowful for us to see what our new generation is learning. I grew up reading “Lab Pe Aati…” ,Bachhey ki dua by Allama Iqbal in school. Most of his writings are devoted to revival of Islam and deliver this message very movingly in his poetical works too. The vision of having a segregated State for Indo Pak Muslims was first put by him in his Allahabad address. The ninth of November marks birth day... (read more)

12. Have we Grown Beyond Poetry?
November 05, 2009
Poetry is dead. There are poets in abundance, but they are amateurs, generally not paid or praised for their chosen art form. The sonnet is gone, mostly forgotten, the words of the epic poem have grown weary, and stale, the entire world of poetry as we know it, as we once knew it, is gone forever.
However it still exists. Maybe it has even evolved, from the mere words and rhyme and measure into something new, something as powerful if not more so.
In the ancient world there were two major lyrical arts. There was poetry, which used words to create emotions riding upon cadences and li... (read more)

21. The Words No Resume Should Be Without
October 16, 2009
Writing a resume is a bit like creating a work of art. There's a hint of poetry to it: given strictly limited space and conditions, you try to say who you are, expressively.
Or perhaps it's a word-sculpture that you keep building. Chipping away here, moving this over there, trying out another word or phrase or arrangement-until suddenly it works! Sometimes it fees like polishing silver, revealing the precious radiance hidden beneath.
Or like washing off a dusty mirror and seeing what you look like from a fresh new perspective.
A resume can be like a sophisticated comic stri... (read more)

22. Alliteration In The Hands Of Genius Writers
October 16, 2009
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Tongue-twister
When writers combine stressed syllables that begin with the same consonant sound, they can achieve not only euphonious sounds, but also mark certain beats and cadence within the narrative's rhythm. For example:
Noise, nausea, and loneliness-but that's nothing really new.
The 'n' consonant adds a very distinctive rhythm to the text, adding a halting cadence to the grim, negative text.
In the following example we find double alliteration provided by the consonants 'b' and 'l;' and furthermore more, we could add ... (read more)
