Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Police are agents or agencies, usually of the executive, empowered to enforce the law and to ensure public and social order through the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police departments of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. The word comes via French from the Latin politia (“civil administration”), which itself derives from the Ancient Greek p????, for polis ("city").[1]

The first police force comparable to present-day police was established in 1667 under King Louis XIV in France, although modern police usually trace their origins to the 1800 establishment of the Marine Police in London, the Glasgow Police, and the Napoleonic police of Paris[2][3][4]. The first modern police force is also commonly said to be the London Metropolitan Police, established in 1829, which promoted the preventive role of police as a deterrent to urban crime and disorder[5].

Law enforcement however constitutes only part of policing activity.[6] Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order.[7] In some societies, in the late 18th century and early 19th century, these developed within the context of maintaining a layered societal structure and the protection of property[8].

Alternative names for police force include constabulary, gendarmerie, police department, police service, crime prevention, protective services, law enforcement agency or Garda Síochána, and members can be police officers, troopers, sheriffs, constables, rangers, peace officers or Garda. Russian police and police of the Soviet-era Eastern Europe are (or were) called militsiya.

14. 10 Reasons why the Met has Chosen an 0300 Number
November 07, 2008

Last month the Metropolitan Police Service became the latest police force in the UK to choose a new 0300 telephone number: 0300 123 1212. The organisation is using the new number as its non-emergency line and to date, around half of the police forces in the UK now use non-geographic numbers, like 0300, for their non-emergency calls. This is mainly because they are highly memorable and help reduce the amount of inappropriate 999 calls received; a point recently highlighted by Commander Simon Bray from the Met: "In an average month we get about 200,000 emergency calls and about a quar... 18. Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri - All we have successfully created is a spineless police force
November 05, 2008

Arindam Chaudhuri, Editor-in-chief, The Sunday Indian I still remember reading somewhere that a few years ago, when a contingent of police in an Indian metropolis had gone to confiscate some contraband computers and CDs, all that they did was to seize the monitors (assuming them to be the computers, while they left the CPUs behind) and contracted labourers to staple all the seized CDs (as they felt that they might get infected by some ‘dreaded’ computer virus). This might sound hilarious to many, but this incidence reveals more than a crude joke. Whenever you think of an Indian pol... (read more)

19. Arindam Chaudhuri - Religious Terrorism: No ifs, buts, or alienation rubbish.
November 04, 2008

With the shootouts and arrests of a number of suspected terrorists, the police seem to have cracked the series of bombings that have been rocking India of late. The interesting thing is that most of those arrested have two things in common. Firstly, they are from Azamgarh (and our cover story focuses on that); and secondly, they all seem to be educated. I was recently there for an interview on a TV channel and the topic being discussed was – “Educated terrorists! Is it the new face of terrorism?” What really shocked me was the complete lack of perspective on the entire issue that the spea... (read more)

November 04, 2008

The US Constitution, through the First Amendment of The Bill of Rights, specifically says, “Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech ...” That’s what it says. So one might think people are free to say whatever they think about any subject. But, is this really true? There are many examples in history showing how people have lost their freedoms, including free speech, through seemingly free elections. The rise of Adolf is one case in point. Though the Nazis only got 43.9% of the vote, they were able to coerce enough other parties to support them so that Hitler was able... (read more)
