Politics and government of
IranThe politics and government of Iran takes place in the framework of a republic with Islamist ideology. The December 1979 constitution, and its 1989 amendment, define the political, economic, and social order of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It declares that Shi'a Islam of the Jaafari (Usuli) school of thought is Iran's official religion. As in almost all revolutions, the early days of the regime were characterized by political turmoil.[citation needed] In November 1979 the American embassy was seized and its occupants taken hostage and kept captive for 444 days. The eight year Iran-Iraq War killed hundreds of thousands and cost many billions. By mid-1982, a succession of power struggles eliminated first the center of the political spectrum and then the leftists[1][2][3] leaving the Ayatollah Khomeini and his supporters in power. Iran's post-revolution challenges have included the imposition of economic sanctions and suspension of diplomatic relations with Iran by the United States because of the hostage crisis and other acts of terrorism that the U.S. government and some others have accused Iran of sponsoring. Emigration has cost Iran "two to four million entrepreneurs, professionals, technicians, and skilled craftspeople (and their capital)." [4] [5] For this and other reasons Iran's economy has not prospered. Poverty rose in absolute terms by nearly 45% during the first 6 years of the Islamic revolution [6] and per capita income has yet to reach pre-revolutionary levels.[7][8]

1. Israel Will Act To Prevent A Nuclear Iran
September 08, 2008
The United Nations is proving once again how irrelevant it is in preventing wars and resolving conflicts. Three rounds of impotent United Nations Security Council sanctions have not acted as a deterrent in stopping Iran from its path of uranium enrichment.
In fact, it would appear that any further sanctions in the next several months will prove equally futile as well. As a result, many international experts now believe that Iran is only six months away from enriching uranium and the procurement of its own nuclear weapons.
The reality of a nuclear Iran presents serious ramifications ... (read more)

2. Review-Iran: Everything You Need to Know
August 10, 2008
Iran: Everything You Need to Know, John Farndon, 2007, ISBN 1932857567
Iran, so much in the news these days, is a country of contradictions. On one hand, it is a very puritanical country controlled by Islamic clerics, where dissent is severely restricted. On the other hand, Iran is one of the oldest countries in the world, tracing its history back over 2,500 years. The name Persia (what Iran was called until the 1920s) conjures images of harems and Persian carpets, not chadors and religious police.
Throughout its history, Iran has had leaders who honestly cared about the people, as... (read more)

3. Iraq War Could Expand Into Iran By Election Day
May 27, 2008
The Democratic presidential primary will be over soon. Eventually, New York Senator, Hillary Clinton, will have to concede the Democratic party nomination fight to Barrack Obama. The polls in Pennsylvania continue to show a very slight lead for the former First Lady. However, in North Carolina public opinion polls indicate a huge lead for Barack Obama. If the polls are correct then it will probably be sometime after the North Carolina primary that the campaign of Hillary Clinton accepts its now inevitable end. The moment Hillary Clinton withdraws from the 2008 Presidential campaign, the ... (read more)

4. Obama Gets It
April 18, 2008
For seven years, congress has done relatively little regarding the very serious problems we face, such as a failing economy for the middle class, a war that we are bogged down in and where we are at the mercy of powerless Iraqi government that sides with Iran, a looming social security crisis, an educational system that is failing the middle class, stagnant wages and falling home prices, and healthcare costs going through the roof . . . while HMOs, drug companies and the AMA are rolling in dough, and while gasoline, college costs, and food prices are skyrocketing. We can't do anyt... (read more)

5. Planning For The Worst In A Nuclear World
March 12, 2008
Weapons of mass destruction have been with us since the bombing events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War Two. The fear of the "wrong weapons" falling into the "wrong hands" is now an everyday consideration in our world. Unstable governments in North Korea and Pakistan have nuclear weapons. Iran continues to defy United Nations resolutions and sanctions as it attempts to obtain its own nuclear arsenal. In total there are now nine different countries that have nuclear weapons capability.
Over the last sixty five years, we have come to the dubious realization that we now hav... (read more)

December 30, 2007
Towards World-War ? Russian Uranium to Iran : Method in Russian Madness ? Iran Now Ready to Strike, Stack USD to survive in a world struck by disaster You do not need to decipher Nostradomus to conclude that the biggest disaster may just be around the corner for the human civilization with Russian delivery of enriched uranium to Iran ostensibly for power generation but a good part of which is clandestinely going to be diverted for Iranian n-weapons very soon (may be a month or so.) The only issue remains to be seen is whether the west waits for Iran to assemble th... (read more)

7. An Escalating Crisis Between Iran and the West
November 26, 2007
The price of oil has reached more than ninety dollars a barrel for the first time during the last month. There is a buildup of British and American forces near the Iranian border. The Pentagon has announced the building of a US base in Iraq near the border with Iran. The navel buildup near Iran continues. The French Government has escalated its public rhetoric about a war with Iran. All signs continue to point to an escalating world crisis between the West and Iran.
Iranian activity concerning Iraq was strongly condemned by General Petraeus and Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, in front o... (read more)

9. Pondering the Important Issues
August 23, 2006
I actually bought a Sunday paper this past weekend, something I haven't done for a while. Reading about all the problems in the world just tends to detract from my retirement euphoria. A person can get a serious ulcer thinking about all of this stuff. I mean, the idea of a radicalized Iran with nukes isn't very comforting. Nor is the ongoing uncertainty about the price of oil. The election victory of HAMAS is kind of a bummer, and no one seems to have a clue about the economy. And I won't even mention the fact I've been afraid to check my stock market portfolio since January.
On... (read more)

10. Politics Aside, Iran Endorses Genetically Modified Rice
June 26, 2006
Iran is in the bad books of the international community for allegedly sponsoring terrorism. U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, testifying in a Congressional hearing a couple of weeks ago, branded the country “the central banker of terrorism.” President George Bush, in his State of the Union address in 2002, said Iran along with North Korea and Iraq constituted an “Axis of Evil” – countries that are chief sponsors of global terrorism. With all bad things that Iran is associated with, many people, including myself, tend to wonder if there’s anything good that can come out of th... (read more)
