Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples and Caserta in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed, and completely buried, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in AD 79.

The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is both one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with 2,571,725 visitors in 2007,[1] and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ruins of Pompeii are situated at coordinates 40°45'00?N 14°29'10?E? / ?40.75, 14.48611, near the modern suburban town of Pompeii. It stands on a spur formed by a lava flow to the north of the mouth of the Sarno River (known in ancient times as the Sarnus). Today it is some distance inland, but in ancient times it would have been nearer to the coast.

The archaeological digs at the site extend to the street level of the 79 volcanic event; deeper digs in older parts of Pompeii and core samples of nearby drillings have exposed layers of jumbled sediment that suggest that the city had suffered from the volcano and other seismic events before then. Three sheets of sediment have been found on top of the lava bedrock that lies below the city and, mixed in with the sediment, archaeologists have found bits of animal bone, pottery shards and plants. Using carbon dating, the oldest layer has been dated to the 8th-6th centuries BC, about the time that the city was founded. The other two layers are separated from the other layers by well-developed soil layers or Roman pavement and were laid in the 4th century BC and 2nd century BC. The theory behind the layers of jumbled sediment is large landslides, perhaps triggered by extended rainfall.[2]

1. Advertising - How To Succeed 2
November 06, 2008

History In the ruins of ancient Pompeii and Arabia, messages have been found with an emphasis on commercial and political aspects and themes. The Egyptians used a thick paper-like material called papyrus to create sales slogans and wall posters. This material was also used in various forms of advertising, such as requesting information relating to lost individuals and items, and was common in Ancient Rome and Greece. Another form of ancient commercial advertising include the paintings, on walls or even rock, depicting various scenes which are evident, even to this day, in many parts of... (read more)

2. Have They Found King Solomon's Mines?
November 03, 2008

The Old Testament describes King Solomon as a man of great wisdom, wealth and power. Jesus Christ spoke about him in the Gospels. A recent article in Biblical Archaeology Review suggested that a first century AD painting depicting his wise judgement has been found in the ruins of Pompeii. The fame of King Solomon has also made its way into popular literature. For instance, the British writer Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) published a fictitious novel describing the adventures of Allan Quatermain, who eventually finds the mines in South Africa. Several popular films are based on the ... (read more)

3. The Explosive attraction of Naples
October 15, 2008

Lying in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Naples is a scenic spot that is certainly one for the memories. One of Europe’s most densely populated cities, the charm of Naples towers above the chaotic nature of the city and its enthusiastic locals. Despite modern urbanization, the city’s structure and landscape still manages to remind visitors of its rich history and ancient Greek heritage. Naples is a lively and vibrant city that has an array of wonderful historical and artistic treasures waiting to be found in and around the narrow, winding streets. And with its close proximity to many intere... (read more)

5. Hello from Chicago - The Field Museum and Pompeii - "Stories from an Eruption"
December 18, 2007

Yesterday I got up early again and typed up my travel reports on the free computer at the Arlington House. Then my friend Linda and I made our way to one of our favourite Chicago hangouts for breakfast: the "Bourgeois Pig Cafe" is located close to the intersection of Fullerton and Halsted/Lincoln and is a 2 story cozy cafe with a small sitting area and patio downstairs, and a beautiful converted living room and balcony upstairs. I had one of my favourite breakfast indulgences: a deluxe Belgian waffle with strawberries, whipped cream, pecans and brown sugar, just a sinful treat on a hungry sto... (read more)

6. The Tiara Effect: Princess Accessory
December 13, 2007

In modern times tiaras are often seen at weddings, balls and other formal events; but at one time they were the preserve of royalty. Indeed, a tiara is a form of crown which has been worn throughout history by various kings, queens, and emperors around the world, from Persia to Pompeii. Most historians credit the Egyptians with creating the first tiaras, but since then they have featured in high society circles throughout history; Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have influenced the wearing of tiaras by making them a required accessory at all social functions during his reign, to ensure th... 7. Roman Sex - Hot Sex from the Frescos in Pompeii
August 12, 2007

http://www.net-planet.org/index.html ">Most people know the Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. Due to the magnitude and speed of the destruction of the city, and the almost perfect preservation of the buildings and frescos on the walls, we can get a very good and factual view of Roman Sex as revealed in Pompeii. Pompeii was known for its wonderful food, beaches, and brothels. Here today, you can see what sexual practices were performed (even how much were charged for their performance, and who performe... 8. Male Sexual Health: Past and Present
August 08, 2007

Preoccupation with the male genitalia and virility is not a new social behavior. Ancient civilizations had already placed a high value on the phallus not only for sexual reasons but also for the preservation of peace and order. The phallus was a very important symbol in the Roman Empire, specifically in the city of Pompeii. Pompeii is famous for being the Roman city that was literally buried in lava, mud, and rocks when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 B.C. Accidentally discovered in 1748, the city was found beneath meters of ash and pumice. People who resided in that city were found stone-... (read more)

9. Chafing dishes are Synonymous with Luxury
July 12, 2007

Chafing dishes are Synonymous with Luxury The extravagant banquets of ancient Greece and Rome depended on them for drama at the table; the ruins of Pompeii show the evidence of their status.  Some of their aura rose from their association with the noble host, himself preparing a delicacy for the entertainment and delectation of his honored guests, as he proved, at the same time, his cultural sophistication and wealth.  With the passage of centuries, very little has changed.  Copper, silver, bronze, and iron, valuable metals in their early development, continue... 10. Pompeii
February 08, 2007

Pompeii Pompeii happens to be one of my favourite places and the following describes a visit not so long ago. Here is an ancient town where the streets and the walls of the buildings are just as they were nearly two thousand years ago. You can even see the graffiti left from the last election written in large red letters on the walls together with the advertisements for the various shops and businesses. The streets, or at least those that have been excavated so far, stretch out in all directions as they always have done. Two main roads heading north and south and another two ... (read more)

11. A Guide to the Significance of Pompeii for Travelers
October 04, 2006

The story of Pompeii has always fascinated travelers, which is why it is a popular destination. While the city represented classic Roman life, the destruction of it has always been the fascinating element. A Guide to the Significance of Pompeii for Travelers At the time, Italy was a place full of ingenuity and historical significance. Rome was considered the most important city in existence and the Roman Empire had expanded to conquer much of Europe, bringing both Roman and Italian influences to the rest of the world. One of the most interesting stories of this time was the calamity... (read more)

12. Italy - Naples and Sorrento
November 03, 2005

Italy is really two countries in one with the wealthy, historic north dominating. To get a taste of the south, Naples and Sorrento are your destinations. Naples If ever there was a city with a reputation, it is Naples. Dirty, nasty, crime infested and fanatical are all words thrown around when describing. In this case, the descriptions are true and it is GREAT! The place is a madhouse and colorful beyond description. Crime is a problem, but you will be fine if you use common sense. Naples is all about “real.” You will not get that odd touristy sensation you find in the cities to the ... (read more)
