Poverty (also called penury) is deprivation of common necessities that determine the quality of life, including food, clothing, shelter and safe drinking water, and may also include the deprivation of opportunities to learn, to obtain better employment to escape poverty, and/or to enjoy the respect of fellow citizens. According to Mollie Orshansky who developed the poverty measurements used by the U.S. government, "to be poor is to be deprived of those goods and services and pleasures which others around us take for granted." [1] Ongoing debates over causes, effects and best ways to measure poverty, directly influence the design and implementation of poverty-reduction programs and are therefore relevant to the fields of international development and public administration. Although poverty is generally considered to be undesirable due to the pain and suffering it may cause, in certain spiritual contexts "voluntary poverty," involving the renunciation of material goods, is seen by some as virtuous. Poverty may affect individuals or groups, and is not confined to the developing nations. Poverty in developed countries is manifest in a set of social problems including homelessness and the persistence of "ghetto" housing clusters.[2] Poverty can be measured in terms of absolute or relative poverty. Absolute poverty refers to a set standard which is consistent over time and between countries. An example of an absolute measurement would be the percentage of the population eating less food than is required to sustain the human body (approximately 2000-2500 calories per day for an adult male).

5. A Model Society Will Not Work
August 16, 2008
Imagine waking up every day to a world of model citizens, where crime and poverty don't exist and everyone is devoted to a better lifestyle and to improving there experience of it. How great would that be?
I don't think it would be desirable for anyone as a continuing experience, and it would go against basic human nature.
I watched a TV show many years ago about such an imaginary society (I believe it was an episode from the original "Star Trek" series). It's been so long I don't remember the details. However, I remember enough that the image of this society paints a picture ... (read more)

August 12, 2008
American artists have always felt free to speak their minds, even when their opinions touch on controversial topics. During the Vietnam War, the politically-conscious Edwin Starr sung out, "War, what is it good for?" to protest America's place in the bloody battle. And leading up the 2004 presidential election, Green Day recorded ‘American Idiot,' an entire album devoted to the dissatisfaction with George W. Bush's presidency, and subsequently, the ever-changing America. Today, Polarity/1 is no exception.

July 30, 2008
When it comes to earning money online and getting rich, most just can't make it. On a daily basis, the common person socializes themselves with people who are fed the belief that the only way to succeed is to retire successfully with a "good" company. The poverty mindset for example will focus on the bills they get each month and keep asking themselves how am I going to pay these each month? The successful mindset will establish a plan for earning an extra income stream to make sure the bills get paid.

15. The Hope of a Better Africa
July 29, 2008
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” – Albert Einstein Africa – a continent marked by civil wars, dictatorship, xenophobia, poverty and , at many times, shame. People are dying of starvation, children are becoming orphans in an AIDS era and her people are still fighting amongst each other. A bleak summation. Yet it is one that, all too often, springs to mind when we think of this expansive so-called dark continent. 16. Prophecy and the American Economy
July 17, 2008
The Bible certainly does not have a section specifically relating to America’s economy. In the most general sense, every nation’s economy is referred to in scripture. The promise is that any nation that seeks God will see a better economy. That said where is America in this picture?
As I sat one morning pondering a prophetic message I received over thirty years ago about the American economy I wondered if it would even be worth it to write about it yet once again. I have explained it countless times over the years and some of those years were during the Reaganomic boom times in which no o... (read more)

THE END OF NIGERIA – THE WICKED NATION IS IMMINENT!!!
Nigeria is so many things to different people; to some Nigeria is a country richly endowed with both mineral and human resources. July 05, 2008
If any nation, society or charitable institution is setting up a target to eradicate poverty then it should start it with providing the facility of free education. June 29, 2008
I dont know about you but I am sick and tired about hearing and reading about how the world in which we live in is such a terrible place. Yes, it is far from ideal but does turning on the television, radio or picking up a newspaper only to hear of recession, poverty and strife really help us? I for one, suspect it doesn’t and whilst I am not suggesting you should bury your head in the marketing sand and assume everything is rosy and perfect in the world, I am suggesting that if you approach 2008 and beyond with the right attitude and mindset your chances of success will increase. 22. Willie Never Had Craces
June 27, 2008
Willie never had braces, but it didn’t impact his brilliant smile. The woman facing me across the table had lots of them, shiny and silver and they made her draw her lips and wipe her tongue across the front of them sometimes when she talked. Her blonde hair and her thirty-something blue eyes flashed as she made her case. She was at my meeting to argue for some of the Title I money. She wanted it for her child’s school. She puled and she whined and she insisted that it was unfair for her child to be so deprived.
I found her attitude of entitlement repugnant. Here was a woman of privilege ... (read more)

President Roosevelt and his committee drafted the Social Security Act as part of the New Deal in 1935.
