In common law legal systems, a precedent or authority is a legal case establishing a principle or rule that a court or other judicial body adopts when deciding subsequent cases with similar issues or facts. The precedent on an issue is the collective body of judicially announced principles that a court should consider when interpreting the law. When a precedent establishes an important legal principle, or represents new or changed law on a particular issue, that precedent is often known as a landmark decision. Precedent is central to legal analysis and rulings in countries that follow common law like the United Kingdom. In some systems precedent is not binding but is taken into account by the courts. Precedent that must be applied or followed is known as binding precedent (alternately mandatory precedent, mandatory or binding authority, etc.). Under the doctrine of stare decisis, a lower court must honor findings of law made by a higher court that is within the appeals path of cases the court hears. In the United States state and federal courts, jurisdiction is often divided geographically among local trial courts, several of which fall under the territory of a regional appeals court, and all regional courts fall under a supreme court. By definition decisions of lower courts are not binding on each other or any courts higher in the system, nor are appeals court decisions binding on each other or on local courts that fall under a different appeals court. Further, courts must follow their own proclamations of law made earlier on other cases, and honor rulings made by other courts in disputes among the parties before them pertaining to the same pattern of facts or events, unless they have a strong reason to change these rulings.

September 23, 2008
A hoodie (or hoody), short for hooded sweatshirt, is a heavy upper-body garment with a hood. The characteristic design includes large frontal pockets, a hood, and a drawstring to adjust the hood opening. The term "Bunny Hug", is also commonly used in the Canadian prairies. Hoodies with zippers are called zip hoodies or zip-ups.

7. Set A Precedent As A Student By Using Credit Cards
June 01, 2008
Credit cards are something that many people start using when they are in college. The reason for this is that a lot of the credit companies target people of this age because they know that they can make money off of them.
Many people think that debt card companies are out there just to provide them with a service, but you can't lose sight of the fact they are a business and they know that through students there will always be business, and therefore they'll continue to offer cards through students.

8. The Value of an Antibiotic Lawsuit
May 24, 2008
While there is a long standing precedent an antibiotic lawsuit against products that have proven dangerous, the lawsuits against the antibiotic Ketek have raised more than a few eyebrows. As one antibiotic lawsuit after another has shown, the negligence associated with bringing Ketek to the United States' market is far beyond anything that has ever occurred before in the pharmaceutical industry. When one looks at the significant number of problems deriving from the use of Ketek, it becomes incredulous to think how this product could have possible been approved. Then, upon careful examinat... 9. Is online poker legal?
April 13, 2008
The topic of whether online poker is legal or illegal is frankly quite interesting. Typically, gambling is managed by each individual state, and as a result some states have legalized gambling and casinos and others do not. However, the internet is not something that can be managed by each state because it is global, there are no controls so to speak by individual countries, states, or governments on the Internet because it is like another world. But, back to the legality of poker online, a question that has no answer or many answers depending on how you look at it. There is no precedent set... (read more)

10. Landmark Decisions For The 2nd Amendment
March 30, 2008
A case that is currently before the Supreme Court is set to possibly establish a new precedent in the making of laws relating to the 2nd Amendment. The case, District of Columbia v. Heller, is examining a law that has been in effect in Washington, D.C. since 1976 that bans ownership of any handguns by city residents. Only active and retired police officers are exempt from the ban. Other firearms are required to be kept disassembled or with trigger locks in place. A ruling striking down D.C.'s handgun ban could set the stage for changes in the law in other states and localities. It wo... (read more)

11. The Beatles - Punk Fashion at Its Best
March 04, 2008
The continued influence of the Beatles on popular culture is a phenomenon that has essentially been unmatched in terms of the scope of their impact. Clearly, there have been figures in the music industry like Elvis Presley, Madonna and others who have imprinted an identifiable mark on pop culture. The Beatle’s however have set a precedent in demonstrating the broadest impact on the culture industry by their influence on fashion, film, the concepts of popular art and music and even religious philosophy.

12. Economists waver over January rate move
January 11, 2008
One of the supposed iron laws of the Bank of England monetary policy committee (MPC) is that it does not cut interest rates two months in a row. Of course, this is a matter of precedent not of statute; after all, if this was absolutely the case there would be no point in Mervyn King's policy making group meeting this month. But it is a matter of precedent. Not only has the MPC never changed rates in successive months; it has also never done so by more than 0.25 per cent. Of course, both of these may simply be a fact that it has hitherto existed in a fairly benign economic environment. Partly,... (read more)

13. The Importance Of Eliminating Stress
November 20, 2007
Stress management is absolutely necessary for leading a happy and healthy life, but many stress management guides take a rather lackluster approach. Yes, you must relax and get away from your problems to reduce your stress level. However, many people are overly stressed, not because they cannot effectively manage stress, but because they have too many stress-causing factors in their life.
In the modern world, the quest for money and possessions has taken precedent over being happy. Our consumer culture and its endless ad campaigns have brainwashed us into believing that having money and n... (read more)

15. Iran's President Tarred and Feathered by Columbia's Bollinger
September 24, 2007
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was allowed to speak at Columbia University on Monday, September 24, 2007 in a precedent setting event that President George Bush later said “spoke volumes” about freedom of speech in America.
Protestors outside the hall where Iran’s president made his speech outnumbered any supporters of the speech that were present and most said they felt betrayed that he was even allowed on campus. The crowd was highly agitated and the drama was exacerbated by the remarks of lawmakers, educators and others that felt the President of Iran should as some said “be arre... (read more)

16. Cell therapies and diabetes
September 20, 2007
Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic stem cells and is characterised by absolute insulin insufficiency. The monocellular nature of this disease and endocrine action of insulin make this disease an excellent candidate for cellular therapy. Furthermore, precedent for cellular therapies has been set by successful cadaveric whole pancreas and islet transplantation. In order to expand the supply of cells to meet current and future needs, several novel cell sources have been proposed, including human stem cells or islets expanded in culture, islet xenografts and pancr... 17. The Pregnancy Test - Getting a Pregnancy Test
September 16, 2007
Tests. You just can’t seem to avoid them. From a very early age, hurdles are placed in front of our progress to see if we’re worthy of progressing to the next level. There is of course much historical precedent for this:
The Bible is full of them, and some are pretty damn nasty. School is riddled with them, mainly to fill our young heads with knowledge of things we will never need again once we graduate. Then there’s the driving test. First we learn how to pass the test, and once we’ve done that, we have to learn how to drive all over again in the real world.
But all of these examina... (read more)

20. State Lotteries and How They Work
April 05, 2007
When the state of New Hampshire voted to go into the gambling business with statewide lottery in 1963, it broke a 70-year precedent and became the first state lottery in the United States. (Puerto Rico has had a national lottery since 1934.) The moralists wailed that the plan would fail and go down in history as New Hampshire’s fool tax experiment. Nothing could have been further from the truth because by 1973, 12 states-New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Iowa, Washington, Montana and Virginia had authorized state florida l... There is a strong judgment against the business of real estate agents in India. In a precedent the Supreme Court of India came down heavily on the property dealings as unjustified gains. According to the critical observation of the highest court of the land the property agents are do precious little to earn the kind of money they do. On honest scale a property dealer is entitled to a commission of 2% on deal involving sale and purchase of a property. Thus he gets that much both from the seller as well as the buyer. The dog clothes industry has exploded over the past few years, and like anything popular it’s easy to pay too much without noticing. So how much should the average consumer expect to pay for their dog’s wardrobe? If you want to go a step higher, how much should the store owner pay wholesale for dog clothing? Since the industry is so new, it’s not as if there’s a huge precedent set to answer these questions, but figuring it out is quite simple.
