Pumpkin pie is a traditional North American sweet dessert, a tradition during the fall and early winter especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The pumpkin is a symbol of harvest time and featured also at Halloween. The pie consists of a pumpkin-based custard, ranging in color from orange to brown, baked in a single pie shell, rarely with a top crust. The pie is generally flavored with nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. This pie is often made from canned pumpkin or packaged pumpkin pie filling (spices included); this is a seasonal product available in bakeries and grocery stores, although it is possible to find year-round. The pumpkin is native to the continent of North America. It was an early export to France; from there it was introduced to Tudor England, and the flesh of the “pompion” was quickly accepted as pie filler. The Pilgrims brought the pumpkin pie back to New England, but it subsequently died out in England itself.[1]

4. How To Revitalize Your Potatoes This Thanksgiving
November 01, 2009
Thanksgiving is curious; though it only takes place once a year, it’s still entirely possible to be sick of its cuisine once it rolls around. It seems to us that people vary their recipes less at Thanksgiving than at any other major holiday - every year, it’s turkey-stuffing-mashed potatoes-pumpkin pie. Many families make their own favorite recipes for Christmas and other holidays, so it seems especially strange that there’s so little variety during a holiday largely devoted to cooking.
Here at RecipeLion, we don’t advocate a complete overhaul of the holiday’s culinary traditions; as with... (read more)

9. Pumpkins Are Very Beneficial
April 24, 2009
Many of us rarely think of pumpkin as a food. We buy a pumpkin to carve at Halloween, then toss it in the trash once the trick-or-treaters go home. We only eat it once a year, if at all, in a Thanksgiving pie. Most people think of pumpkin as a decorative gourd rather than a highly nutritious and desirable food.
This is unfortunate because the squash known as a pumpkin is one of the most nutritionally valuable foods known to humanity. (By the way, the pumpkin is not a vegetable; it's a fruit. Like melons, it's a member of the gourd family.) Moreover, it's inexpensive, available year round... (read more)

20. The Thanksgiving Plan
November 08, 2007
Last year was not the best Thanksgiving ever for me. I didn't have enough seating for everyone, I burnt the pumpkin pie and I was not impressed with my stuffing. It could have been worse though, my great aunt wasn't able to pick apart the dining ware as I had just bought brand new from Pier One. Ha!
The one thing that I learned from last year was that I needed a plan. Not just any plan. I needed a Thanksgiving plan that would not end in a Thanksgiving horror story. I knew that this year I wanted to make sure that I didn't burn any of the foods, while also creating wonderful food for my fa... (read more)

22. Maple Pumpkin Pie
October 18, 2007
What would autumn be like without pumpkin pie? Fortunately, we may never know. Pumpkin pie is very much a part of Autumn in America, dating back to the early settlers. This pie recipe, however, is special, because it adds the gentle flavor of natural maple syrup. It is pretty, too, by adding maple leaves made out of extra crust to float on top of the pie, making it particularly suitable for festivities such as Thanksgiving.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit
For crust:
1 ½ cups white flour
1 tsp salt
2 Tablespoons dark brown sugar
½ cup shortening

If you like pumpkin pie than you¡¯ll like zone diet meals. In fact, if you like a lot of things you¡¯ll like a zone diet. That is because you can eat almost anything you want, as long as it¡¯s in the right proportions.
Unlike weight loss diets that focus on cutting one thing like calories or carbohydrates, zone diet meals use a strict proportional guide of 40/30/30. This means 40 percent of the calories you take in should be from carbohydrates, 30 percent from proteins, and 30 percent from low fat foods.

25. Thanksgiving and Christmas Are Not An Excuse to Get Fat! Avoid Holiday Weight Gain
November 29, 2006
It is that time of year again! Time to fill yourself on ham and turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, and don’t forget the pumpkin pie and eggnog!! Each holiday season we tend to make excuses for ourselves, and why it is ok to binge on food and overeat.
When we overeat, we stretch our stomachs until they expand. What this ultimately leads to is a larger stomach which means we need to eat more in order to feel full. This can turn into a vicious cycle as we continually consume more food to keep from feeling hungry. This especially happens during the holidays. There are simple methods to ... (read more)
