352. Limpy the Mallard January 08, 2017 Last spring a female mallard decided to turn our deck flower pot, tucked under an overhang, into her nursery. Nesting is a stressful and tiresome period for the female mallard, as she lays more than half her body weight in eggs. We counted 11 eggs in her clutch that were incubated for 28 days and then began hatching at 50-55 days. All but two successfully became little fuzzy yellow hatch-lings. 355. Musky Rodent Happenings December 27, 2016 Early one December morning while sipping my first coffee, I spotted a small dark shape struggling on our newly nearly frozen lake. After further observations, I discovered it was a muskrat attempting to make his way from the little island in front of my cove to the nearby shore. 358. Eagle Islands December 16, 2016 It was a clear, warm summer afternoon on Lake Chaubunagungamaug in Webster, Massachusetts. We were anchored in a quiet cove, playing a lively game of cribbage when I spotted a pair of eagles soaring high above us. It was as if they were playing a game of tag.
