A ritual is a set of actions, performed mainly for their symbolic value, which is prescribed by a religion or by the traditions of a community. The term usually excludes actions which are arbitrarily chosen by the performers, or dictated purely by logic, chance, necessity, etc.. A ritual may be performed on specific occasions, or at the discretion of individuals or communities. It may be performed by a single individual, by a group, or by the entire community; in arbitrary places, or in places especially reserved for it; either in public, in private, or before specific people. A ritual may be restricted to a certain subset of the community, and may enable or underscore the passage between religious or social states. The purposes of rituals are varied; they include compliance with religious obligations or ideals, satisfaction of spiritual or emotional needs of the practitioners, strengthening of social bonds, social and moral education, demonstration of respect or submission, stating one's affiliation, obtaining social acceptance or approval for some event — or, sometimes, just for the pleasure of the ritual itself. Rituals of various kinds are a feature of almost all known human societies, past or present. They include not only the various worship rites and sacraments of organized religions and cults, but also the rites of passage of certain societies, atonement and purification rites, oaths of allegiance, dedication ceremonies, coronations and presidential inaugurations, marriages and funerals, school "rush" traditions and graduations, club meetings, sports events, Halloween parties, veteran parades, Christmas shopping and more. Many activities that are ostensibly performed for concrete purposes, such as jury trials, execution of criminals, and scientific symposia, are loaded with purely symbolic actions prescribed by regulations or tradition, and thus partly ritualistic in nature. Even common actions like hand-shaking and saying hello are rituals.

November 05, 2009
Stop Overeating and Improve Your Health with Dietary Fiber Supplements
We have a complex relationship with food, mostly because we eat for many more reasons than simply because we are hungry. We eat because of joyful events, stress, depression, irritation, disappointment or simply because almost every holiday, celebration and social ritual is accompanied by food. This can lead us to eat large amounts of food when we are not even hungry, leading to continual emotional overeating and, sometimes, obesity.
Continual emotional overeating can also be caused by the fast-paced, stressfu... (read more)

3. Ideas as Predators
November 05, 2009
The Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, in 1919 proposed that the best means available for assessing the truth of an idea is to see how it fares in a marketplace of truly free competition. This was a nice slap on the wrist to the would-be censors in our communities, but has never stopped their yowling.
Would-be censors and their assumptions are the predators in the ecosystem of ideas. I say “predators” because, as tedious as they are, it may be best just to tolerate their yammerings, and here is why:

17. The Qualiadelic Experience of Higher Animals
October 09, 2009
Whales, dolphins, humans and surely others (elephants? Chimpanzees?...), all once upon a time looked inward and saw the Qualia in their own minds. It was the birth of higher consciousness.
Qualia, the most well known of which are color, smell, shape, is usually stuff we perceive outside of ourselves. They are the qualities (or quales, as the scientists put it) that attract our attention because our senses happen to take notice of them. We move toward them. If it is beneficial, as it was for the bees that moved toward flowers or the moss that grew on trees, a relationship developed. A Qual... (read more)

21. Why Qualiadelic?
October 05, 2009
People always ask me, why Qualiadelic? Where did it come from?
Well, almost immediately upon reading about the concept of qualia, which comes from neurobiology, I realized that ideas and symbols are qualia, too.
Just like colors, or smells, or other aspects of our perception known as qualia, we are in a special relationship with ideas. Both an insect and a plant evolve together – the insect's ability to sense a particular color or shape or smell evolves at the same time as the plant evolves it's ability to project that quality.
This evolving relationship is a Qualiadelic Rel... (read more)

Ritual in boxes – rituals within rituals – is the secret to making every moment Qualiadelic and meaningful. This can happen in two, different ways.
