Along with most of the other languages of Western Europe, both French and English are daughter languages of proto-Indo-European. French is a Romance language, derived from proto-Italic via Latin (like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan); English is a Teutonic language, derived from proto-Germanic via West Germanic (like Dutch, German, and Yiddish). 8. What might learning Spanish do for you?
June 20, 2007
If you're reading this you're no stranger to learning, so there's little point in telling you that Spanish is one of the most popular languages in the world, that it's one of the easiest for an English speaker to learn, and that it's one of the romance languages. I won't mention them again.
What's far more interesting is to consider whether YOU should study Spanish.
We tend to overestimate what we can do in a week, and underestimate what we can do in a decade (it might have been Robbins who said that). Just think what you were doing ten years ago. Were you in this job? In this town? ... (read more)

11. Teaching the Latin Language in High School
February 14, 2006
Latin was the language of the Roman Empire. All of the Romance languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, are directly descended from this native tongue. Our own English language is heavily influenced by roots from the Latin Language (as many as 80 percent of our language can be traced to Latin). Today, Ecclesiastical Latin is the official language of the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican. With so much influence on our own language coming from Latin, it is surprising that students are not encouraged to study it in high school and college. Though considered a “dead langu... (read more)

12. Russian Romance - I Love You
October 25, 2005
Romance and Russia, the two words just go together. Unless, of course, you are trying to speak in Russian.
Russian Language

Given the fact that I was from California and thus could barely speak proper English, it was all the more a challenge.
Russian Women
In that I was living in Russia for a year, it was inevitable I would pick up a Russian girlfriend. Hey, there had to be at least one craz... (read more)
