Saint Petersburg ( Russian ?????-????????? (help·info), tr. Sankt-Peterburg, IPA [sankt p??t??r'burk, sankt p??t?er'burk]) is a city and a federal subject (a federal city) of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city's other names were Petrograd ( Russian ?????????, IPA [p??tr?'grat], 1914–1924) and Leningrad ( Russian ?????????, IPA [l??n??n'grat], 1924–1991). It is often called just Petersburg ( Russian ?????????, IPA [p??t??r'burk]) and is informally known as Piter ( Russian ?????, IPA ['pit??r]). Founded by Tsar Peter I of Russia on 27 May, 1703, it was the capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1713–1728, 1732–1918). Saint Petersburg ceased being the capital in 1918 after the Russian Revolution of 1917.[8] It is Russia's second largest city after Moscow with 4.6&_160;million inhabitants, and over 6&_160;million people live in its vicinity. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural centre, and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea. Saint Petersburg is often described as the most Western city of Russia.[9] Among cities of the world with over one million people, Saint Petersburg is the northernmost. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Russia's political and cultural centre for 200 years, the city is sometimes referred to in Russia as the northern capital. A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other businesses are located in Saint Petersburg. On 1 May, 1703 (Julian calendar), during the Great Northern War, Peter the Great captured the Swedish fortress of Nyenskans on the Neva river in Ingria. A few weeks later, on 27 May, 1703 (May 16, Old Style), lower on the river, on Zayachy (Hare) Island, three miles (5&_160;km) inland from the gulf, he laid down the Peter and Paul Fortress, which became the first brick and stone building of the new city. He named the city after his patron saint, Saint Peter, the apostle. The original name was meant to sound like Dutch due to Peter's obsession with the Dutch culture.[10] The city was built by conscripted serfs from all over Russia and also by Swedish prisoners of war[11] under the supervision of Alexander Menshikov and later became the centre of Saint Petersburg Governorate. Peter moved the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in 1712, before the Treaty of Nystad of 1721 ended the war.

10. Perfect Witer Business
January 30, 2008
Two students from Saint-Petersburg invented a perfect, extremely low cost business for winter season – they have made an ice hill from old flat tires.
These guys collected all the flat tires they could find and heaped them up. They covered this pile with snow and started to pour water on it until it was frozen and turned into quiet a long twisted „hill”. A ride on this hill costs less then half a euro, but for additional 15 RUB (~0.50 EUR) visitors could rent a plastic plate which made a descent more high-speed, comfortable and amusing.
They built their first ice hill in 2006-2007 an... (read more)

13. St.-Petersburg, Russia in brief
November 30, 2007
St.-Petersburg – the symbol of European Russia, by right thought to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Unlike the other Russian cities, with their common monosyllabic names, the name “Sankt Piterburh” (how it sounds in Russian) consists of two words, each with its own meaning. Sankt is the Latin for “Saint”, “Peter” is the name of the apostle Saint Peter (which is, by the way, translated from Greek as “the stone”), and “burgh” is the Dutch for “city”. This way, the name of the former Russian capital unites the name of its tsar, its saint patron and cultures of ancient Greece ... (read more)

14. The Seafarers' Friend - St. Nicholas
April 21, 2007
The Seafarers’ Friend - St. Nicholas
Seamen are a superstitious lot (avoiding whistling on board ship, etc.), but often also quite religious. As I used to inspect the ships I was involved with, I often saw icons or photographs of various saints or holy men in crew cabins and, sometimes, also in passenger cabins.
Of the various Christian denominations, the saint who seemed to be the most popular, at least insofar as crew cabins were concerned, was St. Nicholas. It made me wonder who was this saint who was so venerated by seafarers.
St. Nicholas, is one of the busiest saints for, ... (read more)

16. Russian White Nights
July 11, 2006
Before going to Russia, I was of those people who thought that in that country is always cold. But in summer, the Russians seem to remember the winter very little, because the heat is intense and they take advantage of it to sun his white skin. The morning in which I arrived at Moscow the temperature was of 20 degrees Celsius.
The north, in the station of Komsomólskoya train, my adventure in the direction of Saint Petersburg began. I believed to have requested a car with bed, in my badly Russian, but without a doubt something failed in the communication, because there was no such. Later ... (read more)

October 05, 2005
For elegance and old world feel, St. Petersburg is by far the best Russian city. If you go, a visit to Peterhof, the summer palace of Peter the Great is a must.
Peterhof
As Tanya and I left St. Petersburg for Peterhof, I was in a foul mood. A pickpocket had cut through the bottom of my backpack and swiped my camera. The ferry taking us was packed and the adorable child on my right had just spilled his ice cream down my leg. Why, I oughta’. My mood was soon to change.
Apparently, sensing my volatile mood, Tanya hadn’t said a word on the 20 minute ferry ride. As we exited onto a long ... (read more)

18. Peter the Great's Summer Palace - St. Petersburg, Russia
October 05, 2005
During the communist reign in Russia, architectural styles could best be described as bland. Fortunately, the summer palace of Peter the Great wasn’t affected.
Peterhof
Known as Peterhof, the summer palace of Peter the Great is a very impressive area. The palace is arranged with a central rectangle format over roughly two or three acres. This area is then surrounded by areas of wood and “nature” as the Russians call it. Peterhof stands out like a jewel among the bland communist structures found in greater St. Petersburg.
