Parts and Components of a Security System

Electronics,Sales,Science & Technology
In the current age, where the fear of theft and crime is constantly haunting each one of us, the only around-the-clock alert vigilance of your premises can give you the much-needed tranquility and peace of mind. And, a security camera system can certainly do that as it proffers a hawk-like vision and never lets you miss out on any detail.

The most simple security and surveillance system would consist of an NVR (network video recorder) / DVR (digital video recorder), one or more security cameras and a monitor. However, there are many additional components as well, which can turn the system into a power packed video monitoring bundle. Some of these components are sensors, control panel, locks, detectors, and more. A rudimentary understanding of your video monitoring components can help you control false alarms; boost your sense of confidence and safety, in addition to facilitating a better communication with your security provider. You can always choose to get these additional components, besides the basic set of gears, to increase the watch around your property. So let’s get straight to the point and explore these components.

Control Panel

The control panel acts as the ‘brain’ of all of your security cameras. It is a touch pad which reads the inputs and simultaneously, follows the orders by arming or disarming the monitoring devices. Usually, these keypads allow the user to feed in the passwords & codes to get access to various devices. And sometimes, the control panel has an inbuilt voice recognition feature too. These control panels are very easy to use and can be placed wherever you want. These panels are provided with a battery backup and a telephone connection. All the devices and components of a security package are connected to this panel and the job of the control panel is to ensure that all these interconnected devices work flawlessly. It also does the job of connecting you to your security provider in case of emergencies.

Motion Sensors

Motion sensors are electronic watchdogs which will notify the control panel and trigger alarms when someone is moving around your property aimlessly. This process of identification is implemented with the use of vibration, microwave pulses, infrared heat, ultrasonic waves, or a combination of these.

Most commonly, the motion sensors have 90-degree coverage and are ideally placed around the corners to have the maximum range. Advanced motion detection technology can also distinguish between an intruder and a playful pet. It is advisable to always check the specifications of a motion detector before purchasing it.

Door/Window Sensor

If you want to keep an eye on every possible entry, then the sensors under discussion are a must buy for you. These sensors are placed on door & windows and the adjoining frame or sill. So, now when the door or the window is opened by someone, the circuit breaks, and a notification is sent out to the control panel immediately. If you’re not home, you can always customize the sensors to set the alarms and sirens as soon as there is an entry.

Just remember that if you need to drill holes in doors and windows to install the sensors, then it might affect the warranty clause of your doors/windows. So, always talk to your builder or landlord before doing so.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

These detectors can detect fire with the help of rising carbon monoxide levels in the air. Smoke detectors can save lives by sensing fire in just a few seconds. It takes seven minutes for a human to realize the danger of fire and take the necessary action while fire just needs three minutes to engulf the whole area into flames. When you have these detectors installed at your location, smoke & fire can be realized in one to two seconds, thereby notifying the fire department at the same time. This early warning is crucial to save people and take them out of the site.

Carbon Monoxide detectors are typically of three types as listed below: • Biometric Sensors: In these sensors, a gel is used that changes color with rising levels of carbon monoxide. • Metal Oxide Semiconductors: Electrical resistance is lowered in effect to the growing levels of carbon monoxide. • Electrochemical Sensors: Increasing carbon monoxide affects the electric current that is further detected by these smoke sensors.

Yard Signs and Window Stickers

Signs and stickers conveying that your property is under constant surveillance will deter burglars and thieves from stepping onto your premises. When you are self-advertising the security levels of your place, it will definitely force the would-be burglar to think twice before committing any crime. Sign boards and stickers like ‘You are being watched’ or ‘CCTV protected premises’ acts like an invisible layer of safety and the most suitable spots to put these are on windows, doors and front yard.

Each of these security component plays a vital role and serves a discrete purpose for the overall protection of your establishment. Just keep one thing in mind that products from different manufacturers might not be compatible with your current system (if you have one). Thus, always check out thoroughly before investing in a new addition to your system bundle.
