Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

A savanna or savannah is a tropical or subtropical woodland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently small or widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of C4 grasses.[1]

Some classification systems also recognise a grassland savanna from which trees are absent.[2] This article deals only with savanna under common defintion of a grassy woodland with a significant woody plant component.

It is often believed that savannas feature widely spaced, scattered trees, however in many savanna communities tree densities are higher and trees are more regularly spaced than in forest communities. Savannas are also characterised by seasonal water availability, with the majority of rainfall being confined to one season of the year. Savannas can be associated with several types of biomes. Savannas are frequently seen as a transitional zone, occurring between forest and desert or prairie.

Although the term savanna is believed to have originally come from an Arawak word describing "land which is without trees but with much grass either tall or short" (Oviedo y Valdes, 1535), by the late 1800s it was used to mean "land with both grass and trees". It now refers to land with grass and either scattered trees or an open canopy of trees.

4. Understanding the Biology of Fear
November 06, 2007

The emotion known as fear, evolutionary biology claims, is an integral part of a person's survival instinct. Observing animals can easily confirm this statement. Terror at the prospect of being killed and eaten is the driving force behind the gazelle's rapid dash across the African savanna. Terror of being pushed out of her fertile hunting grounds pushes the lioness to bite and tear into the flesh of the aforementioned gazelle. Fear is just as omnipresent among humans as it is among animals, and in the past, it was just as crucial to survival. Interestingly enough, recent research is startin... (read more)

I would like to tell you about a wonderful opportunity that presented its self to me whilst I was living in the UK. I moved to England with my partner who had been offered a career launching position with an international firm. I was not presented however with as exciting job opportunities. This meant that I was left to the newspapers of a small town for the next 6 months hunting for whatever meaningless job I could find. This was not the way. I needed something more stimulating. February 16, 2004

Chiefly of the tropics and subtropics, they are cultivated for decorative and economic purposes. Acacias are characteristic of savanna vegetation and are especially numerous in the South African bushveld. The foliage often appears feathery because of the many small leaflets, but in some species leaflike flattened stems contain chlorophyll and take the place of leaves.
