In the history of science, the scientific revolution was a period when new ideas in physics, astronomy, biology, human anatomy, chemistry, and other sciences led to a rejection of doctrines that had prevailed from Ancient Greece through the Middle Ages, and laid the foundation of modern science. [1] According to the majority of scholars, the scientific revolution began with the publication of two works that changed the course of science in 1543 and continued through the late 17th century Nicolaus Copernicus's De revolutionibus orbium coelestium ( On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) and Andreas Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica ( On the Fabric of the Human body). Philosopher and historian Alexandre Koyré coined the term scientific revolution in 1939 to describe this epoch.[2] The majority of scholars date the beginning of the scientific revolution to the publication of two epochal scientific works in 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus's De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) and Andreas Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human body),[3] although scientific developments in the late Middle Ages also played a role.[4][5] In recent years, some historians of the scientific revolution have also begun to stress the pivotal early role played by the Iberian maritime voyages to the New World. By encountering and describing new plant and animal species in the Americas, early transatlantic voyagers helped reorient European conceptions of natural world in much the same way that Copernicus reoriented conceptions of the organization of the cosmos.[6]
