A shepherd is a person who tends to, feeds or guards sheep, especially in flocks. The word may also refer to one who provides religious guidance, as a pastor. Shepherding is one of the oldest professions, beginning some 6,000 years ago in Asia Minor. Sheep were kept for their milk, meat and especially their wool. Over the next millennia sheep and shepherding spread throughout Eurasia Some sheep were integrated in the family farm along with other animals such as chickens and pigs. To maintain a large herd, however, the sheep must be able to move from pasture to pasture, this required the development of a profession separate from that of the farmer. The duty of shepherds was to keep their flock intact and protect it from wolves and other predators. The shepherd was also to supervise the migration of the flock and ensured they made it to market areas in time for shearing. In ancient times shepherds also commonly milked their sheep, and made cheese from this milk; only some shepherds still do this today. In many societies shepherds were an important part of the economy. Unlike farmers, shepherds were often wage earners, being paid to watch the sheep of others. Shepherds also lived apart from society, being largely nomadic. It was mainly a job of solitary males without children, and new shepherds thus needed to be recruited externally. Shepherds were most often the younger sons of farming peasants who did not inherit any land. Still in other societies, each family would have a family member to shepherd its flock, often a child, youth or an elder who couldn't help much with harder work; these shepherds were fully integrated in society.

8. Having babies in London
November 13, 2009
The much discussed subject. Discussed to death amongst women over wine and fags or on coffee breaks at work before having to go back in and face the stress of phone calls and pressure from the boss shouting demands, demands which need to be met there and then in a moments notice. Discussed flippantly like it should be something we will all do one day, like the filing pile that’s mounting up on the desk. We’ll get round to it and deal with it when it happens. It’ll take a bit of thinking but others do it don’t they?
It happened to me on a round the world trip whilst drinking rum and worry... (read more)

13. Don't get bitten by a dog
November 12, 2009
A dog has 3 instincts to danger - flight, freeze and lastly fight. If you approach a dog which is in the dog's mind trapped on a lead, flight is not an option.
So the dog will try to freeze - yet still you keep coming. What's left for the dog to do but to fight.
The reason that terriers are considered more snappy than other breeds is because since they are small, we are more inclined to approach a small dog than say a German shepherd or any of the other big breeds.
The small dog is not more snappy, we are just to encroach into in their space more often, becase we don't feel inti... (read more)

20. The Good Shepherd by Rodney Howard Browne
October 02, 2009
God fills many roles as our Good Shepherd. Yesterday, we saw Him as a pardoning shepherd. Also he is a providing shepherd. He knows our wants before we even ask Him for help, and He revels in meeting those wants ( Matthew 7:9-11 ). In practical terms, that suggests He knows what you want physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In that, he's a defending shepherd. This suggests that God's plan often requires us to stroll through hard times, facing those shadows and dark places in our lives. Have you experienced God's provision, only to fall into successive doubt and fear because of los... (read more)
