1650(±75) °C 2230 °C The chemical compound silicon dioxide, also known as silica (from the Latin silex), is an oxide of silicon with a chemical formula of SiO2 and has been known for its hardness since antiquity. Silica is most commonly found in nature as sand or quartz, as well as in the cell walls of diatoms. Silica is the most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust. [1] [2] Silica is manufactured in several forms including glass, crystal, gel, aerogel, fumed silica (or pyrogenic silica), and colloidal silica (e.g. Aerosil). In addition, Silica NanospringsTM are produced by the vapor-liquid-solid method at temperatures as low as room temperature.[3]

The foundations of the craft came down to Venetians from ancient Romans that knew how to heat up silica (or fine sand) till it starts to melt, add minerals for colors, and shape the hot glass mass into intricate forms. But certainly not everyone who knew the theory of this process could create high quality glass objects. In fact, glassmakers studied for years... (read more)

15. How do GoodYear Fuel Max Tires Work
June 14, 2009
How do GoodYear Fuel Max Tires work? This is a pretty common question these days with the commercials GoodYear is running advertising greater fuel efficiency without compromise. Well the basic premise behind them is that reducing the amount of friction created between tire and road when the car is rolling reduces the amount of energy needed to overcome that friction. Less friction, less energy, less gas. People have been building tires designed for fuel economy for quite some time by mixing silica into the tread compound which serves to reduce the friction between tire and road. These Sili... April 10, 2009
In the production of flat glass the molten silica-based mix is cooled slowly under carefully controlled conditions. This annealing procedure removes undesirable stresses from the glass. Cooling occurs in an annealing "lehr"; hence, the glass is termed "annealed" or "ordinary" glass. Annealed glass which has been heated to a temperature near its softening point and forced to cool rapidly under carefully controlled conditions is described as "heat-treated glass." The heat treating process produces highly desirable conditions of induced stress (described below) which result in additional ... (read more)
