Skin cancer is a malignant growth on the skin which can have many causes. Skin cancer generally develops in the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin), so a tumor is usually clearly visible. This makes most skin cancers detectable in the early stages. There are three common types of skin cancer, each of which is named after the type of skin cell from which it arises. Cancers caused by UV exposure may be prevented by avoiding exposure to sunlight or other UV sources, and wearing sun-protective clothes. The use of sunscreen is recommended by medical organizations as a measure that helps to protect against skin cancer (see sunscreen). Unlike many other cancers, including those originating in the lung, pancreas, and stomach, only a small minority of those afflicted will actually die of the disease.[citation needed] Skin cancers are the fastest growing type of cancer in the United States. Skin cancer represents the most commonly diagnosed malignancy, surpassing lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer. Melanoma is the least common skin cancer but it is potentially the most serious there are over 8,000 new cases each year in the UK and 1,800 deaths. More people now die of Melanoma in the UK than in Australia. It is the second most common cancer in the young population (20 – 39 age group). It is estimated that approximately 85% of cases are caused by too much sun. Non-melanoma skin cancers are the commonest skin cancers. The majority of these are called Basal Cell Carcinomas. These are usually localised growths caused by excessive cumulative exposure to the sun and do not tend to spread. Skin cancer is most closely associated with chronic inflammation of the skin. This includes Many believe that skin cancer can be prevented altogether by avoiding sunlight entirely, or wearing protective clothing while outdoors. However, studies show that Melanoma Skin Cancer is more common in those who work indoors. Skin Cancer is most common on areas of the body that are not normally exposed to the sun, and then exposing the skin to UV rays excessively.

8. how well are you covered for skin cancer?
October 27, 2008
Author: Richard Norfolk
In the good old days (?) before the industrial revolution the economy of this country was largely based on agriculture, and so most of the working class employees spent long hours outside in the fields. Inevitably their skin would have been well bronzed, and in time it became a distinguishing mark of the lower classes.
To ensure that no one could possibly mistake them for working class, the fashion of the time for the upper classes, especially amongst the ladies, was for alabaster skin. This effect was accentuated by the application of white powder, which was ... (read more)

October 24, 2008
As a skin cancer survivor and now cancer survivor speaker I know if you have cancer your body’s pH level is acidic. You can stop cancer growth by normalizing your pH Levels.
I used alternative and complementary medicine as well as conventional medicine (now called integrative medicine) in my ultimately successful fight against cancer. I found that natural cancer treatments enabled me to make profound interior bodily changes that I needed in order to go from cancer victim to cancer survivor. According to Dr. William Kelley, "Only the cancer victim himself can properly treat his own cancer.... (read more)

12. Cancer and Grief
October 24, 2008
As a stage 4 skin cancer survivor speaker who is all too familiar with grief, I believe we suffer many losses in our life when we have cancer; acknowledge the losses and be gentle with yourself.
Much of our life is taken away from us while we have to deal with this terrible disease called cancer, and our loved ones experience grief along with us. It was written by T.S. Eliot, "When we grieve truly we do it badly." What this means for you is grief is a normal response to loss and if it is resisted or if attempts are made to suppress it to "keep up appearances" these will only result in you... (read more)

13. Cancer and Fear
October 22, 2008
As a skin cancer survivor I know all about fear--more than most people ever want to know, in fact.
Fear is natural human emotion. When dealing with cancer, be aware how fear is affecting your relationships, decision making, and actions.
Due to the body-mind-spirit matrix, which means that our thoughts and feelings have a direct effect upon our bodies just as the body's sensations and sensory perceptions affect the mind and feelings, too much fear can work against healing from cancer. Fear is not intended to subsume someone's mind and paralyze one, but that can happen. Pay attention t... (read more)

About one in fifteen white skinned New Zealanders are expected to develop melanoma in their lifetime. Melanoma can occur in adults of any age but is very rare in chi... (read more)
