Type in a word or phrase to search, you can also type in Article ID's separated by commas:

Socialism refers to various theories of economic organization advocating public or direct worker ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources, and a society characterized by equal access to resources for all individuals with a method of compensation based on the amount of labor expended.[1][2][3]

Most socialists share the view that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and derives its wealth through exploitation, creates an unequal society, does not provide equal opportunities for everyone to maximise their potentialities[4] and does not utilise technology and resources to their maximum potential nor in the interests of the public.[5]

Socialism is not a concrete philosophy of fixed doctrine and programme; its branches advocate a degree of social interventionism and economic rationalisation (usually in the form of economic planning), sometimes opposing each other. A dividing feature of the socialist movement is the split between reformists and revolutionaries on how a socialist economy should be established. Some socialists advocate complete nationalisation of the means of production, distribution, and exchange; others advocate state control of capital within the framework of a market economy.

Socialists inspired by the Soviet model of economic development have advocated the creation of centrally planned economies directed by a state that owns all the means of production. Others, including Yugoslavian, Hungarian, German and Chinese Communists in the 1970s and 1980s, instituted various forms of market socialism, combining co-operative and state ownership models with the free market exchange and free price system (but not free prices for the means of production).[8] Social democrats propose selective nationalisation of key national industries in mixed economies, while maintaining private ownership of capital and private business enterprise. Social democrats also promote tax-funded welfare programs and regulation of markets. Many social democrats, particularly in European welfare states, refer to themselves as socialists, introducing a degree of ambiguity to the understanding of what the term means. Libertarian socialism (including social anarchism and libertarian Marxism) rejects state control and ownership of the economy altogether and advocates direct collective ownership of the means of production via co-operative workers' councils and workplace democracy.

We will need to leverage our ‘soft power’ to become a ‘super power’ “My government’s endeavour would be to create such an atmosphere in the country that …the talent in the country should work to prove that we are unparalleled in the world.” – Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India As an Indian, I have been witness to innumerable depictions of India - nation of snake charmers, an insular socialist economy and a resurgent economy. 7. Tea Party Twitter Handles
September 12, 2009

The tea party movement has grown so strong so rapidly that even the leftist mass media have covered some of the events. Of course, they see men and women standing up for their Constitutional rights as dangerous extremists whose very existence threatens the socialist paradise which the new communist movement is building for Americans. One trouble with this media exposure is that all mass media outlets appear to have some sort of dark-ages policy against helping viewers find more information. They talk about tea party groups organizing via Twitter, but they don't list the Twitter handles ... (read more)

8. The Slow Transition Over Into Socialism
September 03, 2009

Mind you, not many would stand now for turning our democracy into a socialist nation, but gradually, slowly, over time, this will be the case. Indeed, if many of those in Congress and in high-profile government positions get their way. They understand that an abrupt turn that pushes this agenda onto the American public will not work. This is why they believe that through small dosages they can accomplish their goals. There are many, many people that define themselves as liberals that should have our respect. They are decent human beings who believe in a better world. They want to share wi... (read more)

10. 5 Myths About Health Care Around the World : T.R. Reid
August 27, 2009

As Americans search for the cure to what ails our health-care system, we've overlooked an invaluable source of ideas and solutions: the rest of the world. All the other industrialized democracies have faced problems like ours, yet they've found ways to cover everybody -- and still spend far less than we do. I've traveled the world from Oslo to Osaka to see how other developed democracies provide health care. Instead of dismissing these models as "socialist," we could adapt their solutions to fix our problems. To do that, we first have to dispel a few myths about health care abroad: 1... (read more)

11. Should We Shame Scam Artists as a Method of Punishment?
July 28, 2009

Many folks believe we should shame scam artists as a punishment. In theory this works great, but in practice it does not work at all. In fact, it leads to horrible consequences. One socialist regulator gave a speech that this might be the best way to treat business scam artist offenders. But a real scam artist would not care and a real decent person miss labeled will have been slandered and libeled. It doesn’t work, indeed, I have been shamed by a competitor all over the Internet and at the sale of my company I think it probably cost me six million dollars in the sale price. Worst off the... 18. A Virus Among Us: Book Review
March 26, 2009

Are liberals in control? Do they really hurt the people they try to help? How you answer depends on your definition of the "L" word. Once, to be a liberal meant to privilege the market over people. So wrote Adam Smith, the guru of capitalism, over two centuries ago. For him, liberalism was nations and peoples pursuing their self-interest, or freedom, in the marketplace. Thus freed, society would prosper. In George W. Bush's America, such liberalism is a dangerous sickness, writes author Samir Amin, a top social scientist based in Dakar, Senegal. In his book The Liberal Virus: Permane... (read more)
