Don't Ruin Your Game, Avoid The Golfing Slice!

Sports
The golfing slice is like that relative who comes to stay for a weekend and it feels like three years. Beginning golfers almost to a man, have at one point or another had to deal and fight with why their ball seems to have a magnet to the trees.

The feared golfing slice occurs once the player strikes the ball with the head of the club in a slapping motion. When this happens the ball is not hit solidly, which causes the ball to dramatically lose distance and have a tendency to find the nearest tree.

The good news for the player is that there are a number of remedies to the slice.

Physics will dictate what occurs next: if you are right-handed, catching the ball in the backswing in golf will cause the ball to shoot off to the right. If you are left-handed, the same motion will send the ball sailing to the left. A lot of people try to cure the slice by lowering the club head and overcompensating. This is treating the the symptom, not the disease!

Golfers who suffer from the slice typically do so because their backswing begins on too much of an inside path. This then causes the effect of the golfer then redirecting the club at the top of the swing and come across the ball on the outside to in path. Pretty soon the golfer is slapping his way across the field, slicing up trees left and right.

One sure way to avoid this would be to make sure your take-away is straight to the back and on an outside path. Downswinging on an outside path will be more difficult for you to fall into, which is good. It will encourage you to swing more from the inside on the downswing, thus causing you to not slash across the ball but actually hit the ball on the inside which should produce a draw!!! Imagine that!

Practice this by going to the range, standing behind the ball, and picking out a target.

Set down a tee about two feet in front of the golf ball and a few inches to the right of your intended target. Now what you need to do while you are practicing is to swing and see if you are following through directly at that tee. This will encourage you to swing on the inside path on your downswing and follow thru to the outside thus causing the desired draw swing and encourage the right to left ball flight. If you're left-handed, simply reverse all of these directions.

At worse, this drill will help you reduce your chances of a slice. At its best, this drill could help you develop a powerful draw swing that lets you add up to 100 yards to your tee shot! This tends to make golfers very giddy and running to the first tee to try out their new swing.

Slicing can ruin a game for a golfer, and it is so easy to fix. By learning and understanding the root cause of slicing you can eliminate it from your list of bad habits and get down to enjoying the game!
