1970 featured the last Super Bowl prior to the merger of the NFL and the AFL. This Super Bowl is remembered as Super Bowl IV. At this time the Super Bowl was a contest between the winner of the AFL Championship and the NFL Championship. The game was little more than an exhibition to show off the talent of the respective leagues. This game was played in New Orleans, Louisiana at Tulane Stadium on the 11th of January. There was some controversy about this game due to the difference in the schedules of the two leagues. The team representative the AFL had an extra week to prepare for the game because the playoffs started a week earlier in the AFL. The representative of the AFL was the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs would have to square off against the Vikings from the NFL. The Vikings were the definite favorite in this game. The odds-makers had the Vikings favored by 12 points in this matchup. The Vikings were favored because of their absolute dominance in the regular season. The team finished with the best record in the NFL at 12-2. The Chiefs were not even the best team in their division in the regular season, finishing 2nd to the Oakland Raiders. The start of the game definitely favored the Chiefs. The Vikings were held scoreless in the first quarter and allowed the Chiefs to get on the board. Jan Stenerud, the kicker for the Chiefs, managed to kick in a 48 yard field goal in the first quarter to put three points on the board early in the first quarter. The second quarter brought more struggles for the Vikings. The Vikings were still unable to get their offense going and things were not looking good for them. Meanwhile, the Chiefs kept driving and getting into position to score. Stenerud kicked two more field goals from 32 and 25 yards to put the Chiefs up 9-0. They still had not scored a touchdown, however. Late in the 2nd quarter the Chiefs were able to turn things around as they get the ball just 19 yards away from the goal line. Mike Garrett was able to put the Chiefs further ahead with a 5 yard touchdown run. The Chiefs were up 16-0 at half. The Vikings looked like they might get back into the game with a 10 play, 69 yard scoring drive in the 3rd quarter, but the Chiefs were able to respond 3 minutes later with a huge scoring drive. The Chiefs went 82 yards on 6 plays, finished by Otis Taylor catching a 46 yard pass from Len Dawson. The Chiefs went up 23-7 with that score and the Vikings would not have anything left in the tank to come back and win. The Chiefs would be the winners of Super Bowl IV by a score of 23-7. Len Dawson was named the Most Valuable Player of the Super Bowl with 142 yards passing and a touchdown on 17 attempts.
