The Dry Tortugas just about 70 miles outside of Key West is a one in a life-time experience for a normal tourist or a hobby fisher. There are most likely not many places on the Earth where you can experience such clear water and such a huge specter of different fish species. You should not be surprised if you see a dolphin swimming beside you while you’re fishing or driving a boat. Act fast! Yes that’s right. In order to ever get to experience the Dry Tortugas you have to act fast. The water levels are raising, and seeing as the islands are so close to the sea, we don’t know how long it’ll be left for us to experience these great islands and shores. However, as of now, the opportunities to fish at Dry Tortugas are amazing. Outside the shores of these small islands lie huge wrecks as well as coral reefs where a lot of really exotic fish species are hiding away from the rest of the ocean. If you get the chance to go to one or more of the reefs you would absolutely have to say yes! Some of the last known living reefs are actually stationed outside the shores of Dry Tortugas. Before you travel to the Dry Tortugas to fish, you will have to find an appropriate fishing charter. Remember that Dry Tortugas is a National park which means that there are limits on how many charters that are given permissions to have daily activity inside the borders of the park. Only 11 permissions has been handed out, so in contrast to Florida Keys or Key Largo where you can find hundreds of charters and guides, only 11 different charter companies are able to take you out on a daily experience you will never forget. Travelling to the Dry Tortugas isn’t just for the professional fisher or the hobby fisher. Taking your family with you on a trip there is a memory you will never forget. The combination of the “non-US” hot and “waterish” climate as well as the opportunity you’re given to catch huge fish and fish you’ve probably never seen before is a perfect combination for your family trip as well. There are rarely any sea sickness on these kind a travels as the water lies so perfectly still mostly all the time. Most of the Dry Tortuga’ tours are being held from the bays of Key West as most of the charters are stationed there. There aren’t way too many tours to the National park per day because of the limits given, that’s why you should never let such a chance get away if you’ve first managed to book a tour to the Tortugas. However, some of these charters are more like “private charters” where you can pay a bit more, and fish uninterrupted for probably two to three days, sleeping and eating on the boat.
