Semantics&_160;· PragmaticsIn linguistics, syntax (from Ancient Greek s??- syn-, "together", and t???? táxis, "arrangement") is the study of the principles and rules for constructing sentences in natural languages. In addition to referring to the discipline, the term syntax is also used to refer directly to the rules and principles that govern the sentence structure of any individual language, as in "the syntax of Modern Irish." Modern research in syntax attempts to describe languages in terms of such rules. Many professionals in this discipline attempt to find general rules that apply to all natural languages. The term syntax is also sometimes used to refer to the rules governing the behavior of mathematical systems, such as logic, artificial formal languages, and computer programming languages. Works on grammar were being written long before modern syntax came about; the A??adhyayi of Pa?ini is often cited as an example of a pre-modern work that approaches the sophistication of a modern syntactic theory.[1] In the West, the school of thought that came to be known as "traditional grammar" began with the work of Dionysius Thrax.

Every Microsoft Excel function that you work on will require you to know the syntax of the function. Essentially, what that means is that you must know where to position the values in the function to get the desired outcome. Simply positioning the wrong input values in a function can give you a... 5. Application-Layer Protocols
October 16, 2009
We have just learned that network processes communicate with each other by sending messages into sockets. But how are these messages structured? What are the meanings of the various fields in the messages? When do the processes send the messages? These questions bring us into the realm of application-layer protocols. An application-layer protocol defines how an application’s processes, running on different end systems, pass messages to each other. In particular, an application-layer protocol defines:
• The types of messages exchanged, for example, request messages and response messages •... (read more)

6. Windows Doesn't Boot If you use MULTI() Syntax in Boot.ini File
October 14, 2009
In Windows NT-based operating systems, which use Intel X86 hardware, you can use MULTI() syntax that indicates to operating system that it should bank on computer BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) for loading system files. It means that operating system would use interrupt (INT) 13 BIOS calls for finding and loading NTOSKRNL.EXE and other boot files. In some situations, using this procedure might cause boot tile problems and make the hard drive inaccessible. At this point you can not use the stored files and thus encounter file loss problems. In order to get your files back, you need to use app... (read more)

10. Scenario Mapping Can Transform Accountants into Database Planners
September 10, 2009
When pursuing a database design project objective, the question of scenario mapping arises often enough to be considered as a design issue. The whole idea is to bring together two environments that can only be connected by conscious effort and insight.
The business environment is the external activity that carries on in real-time transactions and the accounting language is the syntax and semantics of those transactions while the software programming that supports this business activity resides in an unfamiliar and often unnoticed world of electronic circuitry represented by several progr... 12. Correlative Conjunctions - How Master Writers Use Them As Prose Hooks
August 18, 2009
By choosing to start his long novel David Copperfield with the correlative conjunction 'whether/or,' Charles Dickens signals the readers that perhaps they should search for more than one hero in the story. What a startling beginning! Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. Because correlative conjunctions add clarity, crispness, and fluidity to the narrative, these pairs are quite transparent to the reader; they perform their function in an unobtrusive manner. Thus we can say that they don't c... (read more)

Abstract Syntax Trees
An abstract syntax tree, or AST for short, is simply a tree-structured representation of the source code as might be typically generated by the preliminary parsing stages of a compiler. This tree contains a rich breakdown of the structure of the code in a non-ambiguous manner, allowing for simple searches to be performed for anomalous syntax.
