1. All About the 613th Commandment in the Torah
January 27, 2012
The final commandment in the Torah, number 613 of 613 commandments, is the obligation of every Jew to write a Torah scroll. As the verse in Deuteronomy reads, "And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it in their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness for the children of Israel." Rashi and other commentaries, such as Ramban, understand the verse as referring to the portion of the Torah that immediately follows this verse, the portion of Ha'azinu. The Talmud teaches, however, that this verse refers to an obligation to write an ... (read more)

2. Explaining the Divrei Torah
January 20, 2012
Divrei Torah are discussions about a Parsha or a portion of the first five books of the Bible known as the Torah in Judaism. The five books of the Torah and the Christian Bible names are Bereishith/Genesis, Shemoth/Exodus, Vayiqra/Leviticus, Bamidar/Numbers and Devarim/Deuteronomy. The weekly Parsha is read aloud at a synagogue on the Sabbath. After the service is finished, the rabbi will give a talk based on it. There is often a life lesson that is reinforced by passages from the Torah or other Jewish texts. These discussions are an effective way of relating the ancient texts of Judaism to a ... (read more)

3. Shofar: What Does Jew Law Say?
September 30, 2011
Jewish Law Regarding Shofar
Arthur L. Finkle June 2011
The Shofar is the focus of the Rosh Hashanah holiday. Rosh Hashanah is the Day of Blasting (Yom Teruah). The Shofar had played at various Chugim (special holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Pesach and Shavuot) and at several sacrifices. But Rosh Hashanah was a special day highlighting the Shofar.
What reasons were given for sounding the Shofar throughout Judaism's long Jewish history. Numbers, 29:1 provides: "And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation, y... (read more)

4. Exiting the Cave
May 16, 2011
“In the pictures of the old masters,” Max Picard wrote in “The World of Silence,” “People seem as though they had just come out of an opening in a wall; as if they had wriggled their way out with difficulty. They seem unsafe and hesitant because they have come out too far and still belong more to silence than themselves.”
The Talmud is clear that it was more difficult for Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son, Rabbi Elazar, to reenter society than it was to live in a cave for twelve years. They were sent back to the cave for twelve months to learn how to live with other people who had not h... (read more)

5. PARENTHOOD: MODELING FOR THE FUTURE.
April 27, 2011
2 Timothy 3:1-2 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
In Leviticus 19 the first commandment referring to holiness is to ‘fear’ one’s parents. This is not the same commandment as the one in Exodus which says to ‘honor’ one’s parents. Even the Hebrew text reflects this difference. One does not contradict the other but like with God, it represents two aspects of parental relationship. The Talmud teaches that it is because w... 6. THE GREAT PARADOX
March 06, 2011
John 14:6b No one comes to the Father except through me.
The Book of Exodus ends on the most depressing note: Moses tries to approach the Almighty in the Tabernacle but he cannot enter because of the presence of God. He had access to the throne room while on the mount, so what happened? We are faced here with the greatest paradox in the whole Bible. God is to live with us yet we cannot approach Him as long as we are in our human nature.
I sometimes use a trick question with new students. I ask them, “How do you approach God?” I usually get all kinds of answers covering the whole sp... (read more)

7. Shalom Bayis - Patience
February 23, 2011
The Chuppah (wedding canopy) is compared to the Jewish home. The Jewish home is compared to a miniature sanctuary. Just as the Shechina dwelt in the sanctuary, Shalom Bayis (peace in the home) allows for the Shechina to reside with us throughout the week and, especially, on Shabbos. The Talmud tells us that two angels accompany the husband home from shul on Shabbos. One is an angel of peace, the other, the opposite. If the home is found to be in a state of peace and ready for Shabbos, the good angel declares “may it be this way next week“. If the opposite is true, the second angel declares “ma... (read more)

8. Judaic Tradition & Culture
February 08, 2011
Judaism is the name of the religion or belief of Jews. Judaic mythology has grown over the period from many different sources. It all started from the ancient Hebrew bible. Also the bible itself covers a period between polytheism and monotheism and thus has many opportunities that give birth to myths. These were later explored in texts like the Talmud. There is a Judaic belief that God gave Ten Commandments or laws to Moses on Mt.Sinai. These Ten Commandments are to be followed by the follower of Judaism. Judaism is believed to be 3000 years old. The Judaic traditions and beliefs have influen... (read more)

9. Nursing Schools - A History
January 05, 2011
The 1st written history of nursing is contained in the Bible. The Talmud and other writings also mention tending to the ill. In the 5th century BC the Hippocratic Oath was born delineating physician responsibilities and ethics. Even so, it was far later that nursing became a profession and skilled teaching and standards had been established.Beginning with the initial century AD, tending to the sick was the duty of ladies in religious orders. As a young child Saint Marcella was heavily influenced by Saint Athanasuis leading her to devote her life to works of Christian charity when widowed right... (read more)

10. Shabbat Shalom
December 31, 2010
Matthew 12:12 “So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
Due to ignorance of Jewish Law in the days of the Master, many have erroneously deprived themselves of one of the most beautiful gifts God gave to mankind: the Sabbath.
Most people, when reading the controversies between Yeshua and the Judean leadership conclude that Yeshua either abrogated not only the Sabbath but the whole Torah, or that He nullified the Jewish interpretation of Sabbath observance in favor of a more ‘mature’ sola-scriptura approach. Deeper readings though quickly prove both these notions wrong. The prob... (read more)

11. The Coins of the Mysterious Prophet Elijah
December 25, 2010
Possibly no other figure is as embedded into western religious faith and lore as this solitary figure. The prophet Elijah appears prominently in the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Talmud, Mishnah and the Qur'an. Stories of Elijah seem in the Manual of Discipline in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Featured in several Jewish traditions, the Guide of Malachi predicts the return of Elijah prior to the return of the Messiah. Elijah is regarded as a Prophet Saint and recognized on liturgical calendars of the Lutheran Church, Byzantine Eastern Catholic Churches, Roman Catholics Church, The Catholic Purch... (read more)

12. The Voice of Miriam
December 22, 2010
1Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Exodus 2:1-2 tells us, Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. From this verse we could imply that Moses was Amram and Jochebed’s first child, but later on we discover that it is their third after Miriam the oldest who was five, and Aaron who was three years old at Moses birth. Why this strange t... (read more)

13. How Do We Learn Hebrew
November 16, 2010
Today, there are about 7 million people who speak the Hebrew language. Many more want to learn Hebrew. There are many reasons for this upsurge in the desire to learn Hebrew. For many Christians, they have developed a thirst for learning the language that was used to write the Bible. They have begun to realize that the translation, of one language to another, sometimes does not capture the true meaning that was in the original texts. For Jews, it is important to learn Hebrew to understand the Talmud, and, Hebrew is the language used in all rituals and ceremonies of their faith. How to Learn He... (read more)

14. Luke 1:38
October 07, 2010
And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."
Whenever we want to describe a certain principle or event in a very quick manner, we often use a famous expression like: Life is like a box of chocolates …. Because the hearer is familiar with the origins of that line, he understands exactly what we mean. This principle is fundamental to understanding the intent in the statement of Bible characters. A careful attention to Biblical terminologies reveals the intense connections between the Hebrew and the Apostolic Scriptures.

15. Hebrews 11:19
September 25, 2010
He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
Of all the patriarchs Isaac may be the most mysterious. It is a miracle that he even lived at all. He was born out of time from a sterile womb; his life was challenged by his step mother, by his step brother; and if that was not enough, God asked for his life. The big question though is: what happened to him after Mt. Moriah?
When he goes to Mt. Moriah, the text constantly reminds us of Isaac’s presence alongside Abraham. Abraham even mentions to the servants... (read more)

16. The Strength of Arguing
April 13, 2010
The Anshei Knesset HaGedolah conclude the first Mishna in Avot by teaching, “Strengthen your Torah through constant discussion.” (Chassid Ya’avetz, who does not believe that the Mishna teaches us to “Make a fence around the Torah!”)
Who were these people? The Talmud teaches: “Why were they called Men of the Great Assembly? Because they restored the crown of the divine attributes to its completeness. Moshe had said, “God, great, powerful and awesome.”
Then Yirmeyahu came and said “Nations are destroying His Temple. Where are his “awesome deeds? So he omitted the attribute “Awesome.” ... (read more)

17. The Aroma chemicals become more intense
December 29, 2009
Musk was unknown in classical antiquity and reference to it does not appear until the 5th century when it is mentioned in the Talmud (Brachot 43.) as an animal-based fragrance. The 6th-century Greek explorer Cosmas Indicopleustes mentioned it as a product obtained from India. Soon afterwards Arab and Byzantine perfume makers began to use it, and it acquired a reputation as an aphrodisiac.Under the Abbasid Empire of Arabs it was highly regarded, and the caliphs of Baghdad used it lavishly. In the early 9th century, Al-Kindi included it in a large number of his perfume recipes and it became on... (read more)

19. The Meaning of Pink Roses: Love and Gratitude
October 15, 2008
Pink roses are one of the oldest roses known to us and have a rich history that dates back to some of the earliest pieces of visual art. In the Talmud, it is written that pink roses are the only flowers allowed to bloom in Jerusalem; thus, they came to be associated with paradise. Pink roses were the dominant species of wild roses and were the first flowers to evolve into their present-day form. When roses were first cultivated in the 18th century for commercial use, most of them existed in shades of pink – from a pale, almost white to a deep crimson.
With the development of hybridiza... (read more)
