Thai ( ???????, Phasa Thai&_160; (help·info), transcription phasa thai, transliteration p?has¯'ath?y; IPA&_160; [p?a?sa?t?aj]), is the national and official language of Thailand and the mother tongue of the Thai people, Thailand's dominant ethnic group. Thai is a member of the Tai group of the Tai-Kadai language family. The Tai-Kadai languages are thought to have originated in what is now southern China, and some linguists have proposed links to the Austroasiatic, Austronesian, or Sino-Tibetan language families. It is a tonal and analytic language. The combination of tonality, a complex orthography, relational markers and a distinctive phonology can make Thai difficult to learn for those who do not already speak a related language. Thai is mutually intelligible to Lao. In addition to Standard Thai, Thailand is home to other related Tai languages, including Many of these languages are spoken by larger numbers outside of Thailand. Most speakers of dialects and minority languages speak Central Thai as well, since it is the language used in schools and universities all across the kingdom. Numerous languages not related to Thai are spoken within Thailand by ethnic minority hill tribespeople. These languages include Hmong-Mien (Yao), Karen, Lisu, and others.

2. Thai language funnies
November 03, 2008
Language Misunderstandings abound. Thai is not at all an easy language to learn, despite its simple grammar and small vocabulary, due to its tricky tones. It’s a language where the sentence ‘mai mai mai mai’ consist of four completely different words: ‘new wood doesn’t burn’. The Thai word ‘cow’ has ten different meanings: ‘he’, ‘him’, ‘her’, ‘she’, ‘mountain’, ‘white’, ‘rice’, ‘knee’, ‘white’ and ‘enter’. The reader may have heard that Thai has five different tones, but actually there are ten different ways to pronounce a word, because all five of the tones can be long or short. So I’m no... 3. Have Your Thai Girlfriend Checked Out!
October 10, 2008
It's difficult when you try to find love in a foreign country. The language, the customs and culture are all unfamiliar and strange to you, making you an easy mark for girls who want to take advantage of you. This is not to say though, that it is impossible to find true love in Thailand, but as the saying goes, it is ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry. Prostitution is commonplace in Thailand, so it is best that you are always sure that the woman you choose to spend your time and hard-earned money on isn't just leading you on and taking you for a ride. Most often,... (read more)

4. People in Thailand
September 30, 2008
The modern Nation of Thailand is a multicultural society. The predominant Thai culture, identity and civilization emerged as a by product of the interaction of the indigenous population with Tai and other immigrant peoples [ including Chinese and Indian ]. When people call themselves ‘’ Thai ’’ they mean they are in the political sense, subjects of the Thailand nation. If explored further the word has a cultural and, for many, a linguistic sense. However not all Thailand citizens speak Thai and of those who do so it is a second language for them. This Thai identity in its present form is relat... (read more)

5. That single dating ping - Asian Dating
September 10, 2008
A computer ping or a Thai ping
It’s a peculiar phenomenon that two words with completely different origins have travelled through centuries of language and use to finally end up with almost similar meanings. The word Ping (bping) in the Thai language is a word used when couples meet for the first time, fall in love and start dating. The ping refers to the spiritual gaze held between two people for more than a few seconds, it signifies the first sign of mutual love. This doesn’t only apply to Thai or Asian girls either and it surely isn’t connected with Asian religion. It happens everywher... (read more)

6. How Fast Can We Really Learn A New Language?
August 30, 2008
I don’t know about you, but I’ve tried and tried many a time to learn a foreign language. Like many people I’ve always got as far as the basics and maybe how to order drinks or ask where the toilet is, but that’s about as far as I get!!! Around 20 years ago in the UK, the top languages to learn were always French and German; there was never the option of Spanish, which seems to be by far a more popular option. There seem to be so many courses around, but how do we know which one to choose. In the end you probably actually end up learning completely pointless, but fun phrases when in the... (read more)
