November 21, 2008
Muay Thai Boxing began thousands of years ago in Thailand to help the Siamese army as a way of combat against their enemies. Today, Muay Thai Boxing is a form of martial arts, although it looks grueling and devastating with the powerful kicks and fighting that appears to be going on in the ring, it is actually a very calming sport. Muay Thai Boxing is in fact used for anger management and self-control in many people.
When Muay Thai Boxing first began thousands of years ago, there were no rules, no shin guards and no boxing gloves; in actuality the soldiers would tape shards of glass to t... (read more)

6. Tiviram Tales 3- Are you looking for an Asian princess?
November 18, 2008
A lucky treat
Being motherless from such a young age had its pitfalls for me and all my brothers and sisters. A child’s life no matter how innocent at the time can soon find themselves on the wrong tracks and heading in the direction of a life of crime, drugs or prostitution. I’m not saying that prostitution should be listed among the worst things that can happen. It is the oldest profession and so so accepted in Thai and Asian societies. Some of my best friends were bar girls, some of them did it for money, some of them for fun-you know they can choose who they end up with at the end of... (read more)

8. Piquant Bread Bar
November 14, 2008
Long gone are the days when George Street pumped out nothing but pizza and subs at all hours. Last year, Piquant Bread Bar and Grill joined the moveable feast of upscale bistros and lounges that George Street has become.
Piquant is a spare but inviting space, dressed in calming earth tones. Though it bills itself as “Organic, Eclectic, New Age Indian,” the menu is still a shocker. Thai shrimp salad at an Indian restaurant? Grilled portobello coming from the same kitchen as daal and tandoori? Oh, well. Think local, eat global.

A week in Isaan Thailand
Isaan is a region in Northwest Thailand that borders the Mekhong river, which is the border with Laos. We discovered this homestead whilst backpacking in Thailand.

The owners live on a small farm in the middle of a forest, called a homestead. We work on the farm where there are 4 adults and 14 children.

16. Thai History - the Ayudhaya Period
November 03, 2008
Thai History – The Ayutthaya Period King Ramathibodi I’s name literally means ‘Rama at the Bhodi tree’ and pays homage to the tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment and was freed from attachment to impermanent phenomena. After he founded Ayutthaya in 1350 by the building of a canal across a bend in the Chao Phraya river, the city quickly became the capital of his kingdom, which grew in importance when in 1378 the king of Sukhothai was forced to swear allegiance. Ayutthaya was originally named ‘Ayodhya’ after the mythical kingdom of the Gods portrayed in the Ramayana epic, w... (read more)

17. Pattaya, Thailand - Top 5
November 03, 2008
Pattaya Top 5 1) Tee off. If you are a fanatic golfer or one who doesn’t like to play the same course twice then Pattaya, which has more nearby top-flight golf courses than any other Thai beach resort, is the place for you. 2) Get foamed at the Hard Rock Café. Once everyone is suitably inebriated, a thick blanket of foam is pumped onto the dance-floor, under whose cover everyone slips and slides around. Although this is about as attractive to older visitors as a spell in a dentist’s chair, younger tourists love it. 3) Check in at the Cabbages and Condoms Resort. Part of a nationwide ch... 18. Thai History - The Modern (Bangkok) Period
November 03, 2008
Thai History – The Bangkok Period Shortly before the Burmese siege of Ayutthaya ended in its demise as the capital of the nation in the Ayutthaya era of Siamese history, a young general called Phaya Taksin gathered some men in the city, broke out through the Burmese lines and escaped the subsequent fall and sacking of the city. The Burmese had to withdraw some of their forces to counter a threat on another of their borders and, when Phaya Taksin returned at the head of an army seven months later, he was able to expel the city’s weakened garrison. After proclaiming himself king he looked... (read more)

19. Bangkok - City of Angels - plus a few beelzebubs
November 03, 2008
Whilst Bangkok’s Thai name nowadays is ‘Krung-thep’, which means ‘city of angels’, its original name was … Bangcok. This meant ‘village of plums favoured by boars’. There aren’t so many boars, angels or plum trees in modern Bangkok, but this most effervescent of cities, after its recent sprucing up, does have a lot else to offer the visitor.
Drive down one of Bangkok’s many tree-lined streets and you can almost imagine yourself on a French boulevard, until the vehicle in front belches out a noxious blast of black fumes and the traffic policeman on the corner retreats inside his booth for... (read more)

20. Behind the Thai Smile
November 03, 2008
“A good holiday is one that is spent among people whose notions of time are vaguer than yours” - J.B. Priestley If the Thais are not number one on the list of the world’s happiest peoples, then they are at least very close to the top, in part due to their attitude to adversity, which is stoic in the extreme. Hardly anybody in Thailand will off-load their problems and miseries on you, as this is seen as an imposition; they will smile and joke at their misfortunes instead. In a memorable interview of a tsunami survivor who had lost almost her entire family in the tragedy, she amazed Western a... (read more)

21. Thai language funnies
November 03, 2008
Language Misunderstandings abound. Thai is not at all an easy language to learn, despite its simple grammar and small vocabulary, due to its tricky tones. It’s a language where the sentence ‘mai mai mai mai’ consist of four completely different words: ‘new wood doesn’t burn’. The Thai word ‘cow’ has ten different meanings: ‘he’, ‘him’, ‘her’, ‘she’, ‘mountain’, ‘white’, ‘rice’, ‘knee’, ‘white’ and ‘enter’. The reader may have heard that Thai has five different tones, but actually there are ten different ways to pronounce a word, because all five of the tones can be long or short. So I’m no... 22. Ao Nang, Thailand's Best All-round Beach Destination
November 03, 2008
Ao Nang, Thailand's best all-round beach destination Due to its central location in the Andaman Sea and to its fabulous topography and sporting opportunities, Ao Nang is at the moment arguably Thailand’s best all-round beach destination. The development of Thai beaches, like those the world over, follows a standard cycle. First they get discovered by backpackers, for whom cheap beach-huts are erected. Islands such as Koh Muk and Koh Lao Liang are still at this stage, where the island is as pristine as anyone could wish for, but lacks the facilities which most of us don’t want ... (read more)

24. Monster Fishing Ao Nang, Thailand
October 30, 2008
Fish Ao Nang - Gillham's Fish Resort Monster-fishing, Thai style This article was originally published in Adrenaline e-zine. When entrepreneur Stuart Gillham needs to explain the location of his Amper Muang fishing resort, he says: “near the dirt mound and the building site”. If that makes you suspect that the resort itself might be a bit of a tip, understand that, consciously or otherwise, Gillham is following the business adage that says: “underpromise and overdeliver”. Bird's Nest Climbers of Thailand This article was originally published in Adrenaline e-zine Rock-climbers who wish to climb off the beaten track are advised to learn a little about the birds’ nest collectors who control large numbers of perfect climbing islands in Phang Nga bay and off the southwestern Thai coastline. Climbers who climb such crags without permission will find themselves in very, very deep trouble. Please be advised not to under any circumstances do it.
