Henry David Thoreau (born David Henry Thoreau; July 12, 1817&_160;– May 6, 1862) [1] was an American author, naturalist, transcendentalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, sage writer and philosopher. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay, Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions were his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern day environmentalism. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance influenced the political thoughts and actions of such later figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Thoreau is sometimes cited as an individualist anarchist[2][3] as well as an inspiration to anarchists. Though Civil Disobedience calls for improving rather than abolishing government&_160;– "I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government"[4]&_160;– the direction of this improvement aims at anarchism “‘That government is best which governs not at all;’ and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.”[4]

August 20, 2008
Henry David Thoreau said that the blueberries that you pick yourself taste better than the ones you buy at the market. This is very true. Growing your own fruits and vegetables, working the soil, planting the seeds and harvesting your garden, is rewarding and a great, relaxing hobby. Growing your own food ensures that you know exactly where you food comes from and what, if any, pesticides were used. Gardening is also a great way to unwind and relieve stress. It is also good exercise, digging, stooping and pulling weeds can be a pretty good workout. So, whether you are planning a full-sca... (read more)

5. Voluntary Simplicity
March 26, 2008
Our life becomes more complex every day. The time of its simplifying has come. Henry Thoreau closely touched our problem, when wrote: “The price of anything is the amount of life that you have to pay for it. I devote a greater part of my life to the trifles that I don’t need. And I believe that you did the same.
Will Rogers said the true words too. He said that the majority of people spend money they don’t earn themselves. So, they buy unnecessary things
In order to impress others. It is a sad truth, isn’t it?
The majority of the people spend the hours sitting in bus or troll... (read more)

6. The Art of Attraction/Manifestation
March 14, 2008
The poet Henry David Thoreau said; “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” What the poet was basically saying is that many of us never seem to reach our dreams or get what they want out of life. The reason many of us lead lives of desperation is because of a lack of knowledge in how to achieve the life we want.
Learning the art of attraction and manifestation will help us achieve what we want in life, by focusing in on what we want. Basically, the law of attraction states that we draw into ourselves anything we focus on. Studies ... (read more)

January 11, 2008
"As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness." -Henry David Thoreau-
As we review back on 2007 we become aware, if we haven't already, that there is a trend or even better put a pushing to simplify our lives. For so long it was the trend to get and then get even more, then huge events happened nationwide to show us that we could do with actually very little and all that "stuff" was in fact weighing us down and becoming burdensome.
Here we see by this quote that Henry Dav... (read more)

11. Bigger Thinking Leads to A Bigger Life
June 20, 2007
Bigger Thinking Leads To A Bigger Life By Dennis Harting
“Small” thinking creates more dissatisfaction in life than any other single factor. People, by the nature, want to be successful. The human spirit yearns to attain great things. Unfortunately, the general population settles for less than they are capable of. Thoreau summed it up when he said that most people live a life of quiet desperation. The inner desire for all that life offers is typically in conflict with the outer results being achieved.
What is your true greatness? Determining this begins with thinking much bi... (read more)

What do you do when you wake up and realize that your life would be so much better if you had only made different decisions? How do you handle the reality of the loneliness you feel because you chose not to marry, you ended up divorced or you chose not to have children? Or, how do you lose 100 lbs.; when 50 lbs. ago it would’ve been a heck of a lot easier?

13. What's Your Story?
March 11, 2007
"Things do not change, we change." -Henry David Thoreau
What’s the story you repeat to everyone about your life or your situation? It’s the same story you tell yourself over and over about why things are the way they are in your life. It really doesn’t matter what the story is, except for the fact that it’s what keeps you stuck.
Whatever we predominantly focus on is what we will ultimately experience. If you are constantly talking about your life’s situation, coming from a negative, whoa-is-me perspective, you will attract more of it into your life.

September 23, 2003
"What a man thinks of himself, that is what determines, or rather indicates, his fate."

Some of the healthiest marriages that we know of consist of two people who each like themselves.
