Discover Art with Heart in Magical Malaga

Travel & Tourism
Malaga, which lies on Spain’s southern coast is a city well known for its rich culture and artistic history. Besides being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, who is perhaps the most famous artist of the twentieth century, the city is dotted with museums, galleries and other areas of creative intrigue – hidden gems glistening under the hot Spanish sun. To discover the very heart of Malaga pasted onto a canvas or moulded into clay, here are a few hotspots to get you started.

Centre Pompidou

The first on the list is the Centre Pompidou, one of the most innovative and unique cultural buildings in Malaga, and easily reachable via Malaga Airport transfer. The centre features a range of engaging exhibitions exploring the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including huge names such as Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Frida Kahlo, Alberto Giacometti and Max Ernst. Of particular interest is the permanent impressionist exhibition as well as the temporary ones held each year that explore the potential of multidisciplinary art and contemporary mediums.

Artisan’s Markets

The city also boasts several old artisan’s markets, selling a range of bespoke, authentic items and prints, perfect for gifts and trinkets to bring home as souvenirs. There are quite a few locations with each market catering to specific demands:

• Plaza de la Merced: Located right at the town centre and close to Picasso’s birthplace, Plaza de la Merced is a hotspot of artists, selling unique items in a range of styles, including classic craftsmanship and more modern pieces. • Antonio Banderas Promenade: Here, right next to some of Malaga’s most beautiful beaches, is an artisan market featuring a range of craft and charity stalls selling bespoke and traditional pieces alike. • Ciudad de Melilla Promenade: This market, with its renowned urban beach, is held once a month and features stalls selling fashion items, accessories, ornaments and much more.

GACMA

GACMA is Malaga’s very own museum of contemporary and modern art, exposing both locals and the many thousands of tourists who visit each year to some of the most innovative and exciting developments on show in the art world. The gallery is owned and run by a private organisation and boasts a huge 500 square metres of space, featuring both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The gallery is also home to a coffee bar and library – perfect for discovering more about some of the artists whose work is housed in the GACMA.

How to Get There

Once your plane lands, simply take a Malaga Airport transfer straight to your accommodation. It’s best to consider pre-booking in order to get your holiday started as smoothly as possible.

The artistic wonders of one of Europe’s culturally undiscovered gems is waiting to be explored. With Malaga Airport transfers available to many spots all around the city, you can start your adventure from the moment you step off the plane.
