Personally, I can’t think of a better way to enjoy a holiday in Ciutadella, Menorca than by soaking up the sun, eating some good food, drinking great wine and listening to some live classical music. If you don’t agree, you should take the time to visit the town’s annual music festival while staying at your villa near Ciutadella. You’re sure to be converted after the first note you hear. |
Ciutadella’s Annual Summer Music Festival
If you intend to come to Menorca for the festival, please be aware that the event takes place at the height of the summer. The island is packed with tourists from around the world, and if you leave accommodation arrangements to the last minute, you could find yourself with nowhere to stay. Book your villa near Ciutadella as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.
The celebration takes place all over the town, which was once the capital of Menorca. The central venue, however, is the 17th century El Socorro Church. Listening to a piece of chamber music, an aria from an opera, or a violin or piano solo from an upcoming talent in the vast space of the church is an experience in its own right. The sounds reverberating from the walls and high ceilings envelope you and penetrate to the very depths of your soul. That may sound a bit “over the top”, but believe me, it’s true!
The festival has been an annual tradition since 1973 and showcases famous Spanish and international artists and orchestras, as well as newer, upcoming musicians and singers. Needless to say, there are many activities around town which you can enjoy between performances (such as a good meal of locally caught fish).
Ciutadella is on the western end of Menorca. While Arabs ruled the city, it was the capital of the island, but in the 18th century when the British took over Menorca (on and off for a few decades) they moved the capital to Mahon (or Maó, as it is called in Catalonian).
There is evidence – in the form of megaliths known as taulas and other archaeological findings – that the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC. Of special interest is the Old City, which is known for its medieval streets and passageways. The Old City also contains several palaces, churches and fortresses for you to explore.
Renting a villa near Ciutadella gives you the opportunity to not only experience this magical, romantic city and its music festival, but also the many coves, beaches, and small fishing villages that are characteristic of the area. We have to mention the fabulous beaches formed by the inlets of Mitjana, Trabalúger and Galdana – the perfect place to lie back and soak up the sun, enjoy some water sports before returning to the city for the excellent festival in its enchanting surroundings.
