The Best Stop Offs on a Rhine River Cruise

Travel & Tourism
Some of Europe is best seen by boat, and the Rhine River region is no exception. This legendary river is one of the continent’s major waterways, winding through beautiful countryside in Germany, France, the Netherlands and more.

Keep reading for our favourite cities to visit on your own Rhine river cruise.

Rüdesheim

Wine lovers, rejoice: Rüdesheim is the city for you. Located in the heart of Germany wine-growing country, this is a great place to try local Riesling wine to cool off in warm summer months. Visitors in the winter can sip Rüdesheim Coffee, a delicious concoction of sugar, whipped cream and locally-distilled brandy (plus a dash of coffee of course).

For sight-seeing, visitors can check out the city’s many wine bars, a castle with a wine museum or wander through the quieter medieval streets, popularised by the nineteenth-century Romantics.

Strasbourg

France might be best-known for its capital city, but Rhine river cruise travellers can explore one of the country’s lesser-known historical beauties. Located right on the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg is a real mix of European architecture, culture and cuisine.

Step off your boat to explore Strasbourg’s old-world cathedral or the contemporary European Parliament building. Petite France is one of the city’s most picturesque neighbourhoods and is not to be missed. While you’re there, go on a food tour, since gastronomy is a major tourist attraction in Strasbourg.

Koblenz

Located at the intersection of the Rhine and Mosul rivers, Koblenz is best-known for its German Corner, a huge statue of Wilhelm I from 1897. The largest military stronghold in Europe, Festung Ehrenbreitstein, is also located in Koblenz, perched on a high cliff over the river. Visitors can take the Seilbahn cable car over the river for magnificent views on the way to the fortress. During its busiest season, the cable car can take 7,000 passengers across the river each hour.

Cologne

While most of this German city was destroyed during WWII, there is still much to explore in newly-rebuilt Cologne (called Köln by locals). Visit the magnificent gothic cathedral, which began construction in 1248 and was only completed in 1880, or sip a local Kölsch beer. Stroll through the old town, as the mix of old and new makes for an interesting afternoon of sight-seeing.

Get Ready to Go

Many companies specialise in organising adult-only getaways, so look for one with a designated Rhine river cruise. These travel-savvy experts will take care of arranging the finer details so you can sit back and enjoy the finer aspects of your Rhine river cruise.

Whether you’re a wine aficionado, enjoy marvelling at old architecture or simply want to relax with a local beer after a day on the river, there is something for everyone on these top locations for stop offs on your Rhine river cruise.
