Porcelain and Painters: Enjoy the Art and Culture of Delft

Travel & Tourism,Art and Culture
Just under an hour from the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, Delft is an unmissable destination for culture vultures and art lovers. A visit to this city will certainly enrich your trip to the Netherlands – it boasts some great attractions which are sure to leave you recommending the city to others for years to come.

Delft Blue Pottery

After arriving in Amsterdam following your Schiphol airport transfer, Delft is just 45-50 minutes away by taxi. The world-famous Delft Blue pottery is made by Royal Delft and has been for 365 years.

These ceramics are internationally renowned, and a visit here will give you the chance to see the authentic process through which the products are made. Royal Delft is the last remaining factory from the 1600s – over 30 earthenware factories were in operation during the Golden Age.

An interactive exhibition at the Museum Prinsenhof will invite you to discover the heritage of this pottery. You’ll find the museum in St. Agathaplein. The exhibitions here never fail to provide visitors with a unique and incredibly interesting experience. A short walk from the museum will take you to the breath-taking original artworks at Kunstsuper.

Also at St. Agathaplein, you’ll find three stunning porcelain lampposts painted in the traditional Delft Blue style. The square in which they stand is hundreds of years old and showcases a delightful blend of the old and the new.

Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer is one of Delft’s most famous and iconic painters, and a visit to his home gives tourists the opportunity to explore his life story and admire his incredible artworks. Your visit will give you an astonishing glimpse into the life of Vermeer and will show you reproductions of his art, including some information about the methods behind his work.

The Vermeer Centrum offers guided tours in both Dutch and English, with to-scale reproductions of all of Vermeer’s paintings on display for you to enjoy. A short film will take you through the story of his life as well as the events which shaped the city which he knew back in the 17th century.

How to Get There

Flying into Schiphol airport is the best way to reach Amsterdam, and pre-booking a Schiphol airport transfer to take you from the airport directly to your accommodation is sure to put your mind at rest.

A Schiphol airport transfer is a cost-effective and easy way to reach your destination, and pre-booking will mean that you have everything sorted to ensure your journey is as easy and relaxing as possible.

The city of Delft has so much to offer. After arriving in Amsterdam, you’ll find that the city is less than an hour way, so is definitely worth the visit. Take in the colour, splendour and beauty of Delft Blue as well as the story of a world-famous artist, Johannes Vermeer.
