Plane Crash Leads Russia to Retire Tupolevs June 23, 2011 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday recommended the permanent grounding of all Soviet-built Tupolev passenger airplanes, like the one that crashed this week.The plane crashed on a road in heavy fog moments before its scheduled landing at Petrozavodsk airport in northwest Russia, killing 44 people. A young boy later died of his injuries, increasing the death toll to 45. Medvedev said the Tupolev-134 should be withdrawn from operation starting next year. 3. 44 Reported Killed in Russian Plane Crash June 21, 2011 Russian officials say 44 people were killed and eight others injured when a passenger plane crashed late Monday in Russia's northern republic of Karelia.  The plane, a Tupolev 134, with 52 people on board was trying to land at Petrozavodsk airport, about 650 kilometers northwest of Moscow, when it crashed on a nearby highway and caught fire.The survivors were taken to Petrozavodsk hospitals.  Russian news reports quoted officials as saying that bad weather could have been a factor in the accident, but that human error is not ruled out.  Heavy fog was reported at the time of the crash.RIA novos... 4. Russian Plane Crash Kills 5, Injures 51 March 17, 2007 Russian officials say five people were killed and 51 injured Saturday in the crash landing of a Russian airliner. A spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry said the Tu-134 jet made a hard landing in the city of Samara in southeastern Russia when its landing gear failed to deploy. The spokesman said the plane's fuselage hit the runway. The Tupolev Tu-134 was the standard short-haul jet airliner in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe for many years. 5. Iran Plane Crash Kills 80 September 01, 2006 Iranian state television says at least 80 people have been killed after an airplane caught fire during landing in the northeastern part of the country. The Russian-made Tupolev plane was reported carrying 147 passengers at the time of the incident in the city of Mashhad. Iranian media say the fire started when one of the plane's tires burst during landing. The plane was arriving in Mashhad from the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
