Presidential election results map. Red denotes states won by Bush/Cheney, Blue denotes those won by Kerry/Edwards. The split vote in Minnesota denotes a faithless elector's vote counted for John Edwards. Each number represents the electoral votes a state gave to one candidate.

The United States presidential election of 2004 was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2004, to elect the President of the United States. It was the 55th consecutive quadrennial election for President and Vice President. Republican Party candidate and incumbent President George W. Bush defeated Democratic Party candidate John Kerry, the junior U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. Foreign policy was the dominant theme throughout the election campaign, particularly Bush's conduct of the War on Terrorism and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

As in the 2000 presidential election, voting controversies and concerns of irregularities emerged during and after the vote. The winner was not determined until the following day, when Kerry decided not to dispute Bush's win in the state of Ohio. The state held enough electoral votes to determine the winner of the presidency. Both Kerry and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean have stated their opinion that voting in Ohio did not proceed fairly and that, had it done so, the Democratic ticket might have won that state and therefore the election. [2]

Only three states changed allegiance. New Mexico and Iowa voted Democratic in 2000, but voted Republican in 2004. New Hampshire voted Republican in 2000 but voted Democratic in 2004. In the Electoral College, Bush received 286 votes, and Kerry 251. Kerry's running mate, John Edwards ran as a Democratic candidate also, and a faithless elector from Minnesota happened to cast one electoral vote for him, with John Kerry as his running mate.

November 01, 2009

The Cold War is a state of relationship between the USSR and its surrounding regions, and the Western World led by the United States over a period ranging from 1945 to 1991. The Cold War according to Christopher Freville expressed itself in military tension, conflict in political ideologies and economic competition between the two sides. Bernard Baruch is attributed with first using the term Cold War. He was a presidential advisor and US financier. In a speech delivered on April 16, 1947 in South Carolina he stated that the US was in the midst of a cold war. The media picked it up and a ... (read more)

2. US Legislators Debate Way Forward in Afghanistan
October 11, 2009

The acknowledgment by U.N. officials of significant fraud in Afghanistan's presidential election comes as the United States debates the future of America's eight-year military involvement in the country. U.S. legislators are expressing sharp differences on the best way forward in Afghanistan while the Obama administration conducts a review of U.S. strategy in the war-torn nation.American lawmakers from both major political parties agree on one central idea: that Afghanistan must not revert to a safe haven for terrorists and militant extremists. Beyond that, consensus is hard to find.Senate J... (read more)

3. Going for Change
October 02, 2009

When Barrack Obama was elected president things the way we see it has changed for good. What people are trying to grasp as statements without proof regarding the clear obstruction on racism has become tangible by giving the presidential seat to an African American. This time another issue arises in the United States as the man who made American Presidential History nominates for the Supreme Court’s seat to yet another person from a different race—Sonia Sotomayor. Discrimination has been one of the rampant reasons why someone qualified, yet who happens to be from another race, just can’t s... (read more)

4. Presidential Memorial Certificates Honor Nation's Veterans
October 02, 2009

Citizens of the United States may not agree on many things, but most citizens as well as the government of the U.S. continue to hold the many sacrifices of our military veterans in highest regard. Because of that high esteem, and regardless of when a veteran served or the veteran's cause of death, the President of the United States will send an engraved, signed memorial certificate on behalf of their grateful Nation to any family members and friends of deceased veterans who request one. The Department of Veterans Affairs is in charge of administering this program, which has been in effec... (read more)
