Uruguay (official full name in Spanish República Oriental del Uruguay; pron. Spanish pronunciation [re'pußlika o?jen'tal del u?u'?wai], Eastern Republic of Uruguay) is a country located in the southeastern part of South America. It is home to 3.46 million people,[1] of which 1.7 million live in the capital Montevideo and its metropolitan area.

It is bordered by Brazil to the north, by Argentina across the bank of both the Uruguay River to the west and the estuary of Río de la Plata to the southwest, and the South Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. Its surface is 176.215 km² beeing by its territorial extension the second smallest country in South America, larger only than Suriname and the French overseas department of French Guiana.

Montevideo was founded by the Spanish in the early 18th century as a military stronghold. Uruguay won its independence in 1825-1828 following a three-way struggle between Spain, Argentina and Brazil. It is a constitutional democracy, where the president fulfills the roles of both head of state and head of government.

The economy is largely based on agriculture (making up 10% of GDP and the most substantial export) and the state sector, Uruguay's economy is on the whole more stable than in its surrounding states, and it maintains a solid reputation with investors.

August 05, 2008

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz occurring in hues ranging from a light pinkish violet to a deep grape purple. The most sought after color is the deep violet exhibiting flashes of red. This variety is termed as the “Siberian” though it is got from places other than Siberia. Most material from Brazil occurs in a tender violet, while that coming from Madagascar are generally red or violet. Uruguay has the most exquisitely deep colored amethysts but the supplies have almost tarnished. The legend of this stone holds that the Greek God of intoxication, Dionysius, was once insulted by a... 2. Brazil people and food
March 04, 2008

Brazil has hundreds of miles of pristine and undeveloped beaches that stretch from the tropical north to Rio de Janeiro and all the way down to the border with Uruguay. With cities such as Rio, there are plenty of developed areas to buy in and be near the ocean, but there are also many less expensive areas farther north. The most popular stretch of coast for new development and international investment is in the northeast, stretching from Salvador, in the state of Bahia, around Natal at the tip of Brazil and up to Fortaleza. While this part of the country has long been popular with Brazilians... (read more)

7. My First Scarf Using Rio De La Plata Yarn
September 23, 2007

I don't ever remember a time when I didn't knit. However, I have to confess that it's only recently that I turned my hand to hand-dyed yarns. Maybe the more I knit the more snobbish I become about it. I hope not. Anyhow, I've just tried using some hand-dyed wool from Rio De La Plata Yarn. Rio De La Plata Yarn is more than just a hand-dyed yarn; it's actually made by a cooperative in Uruguay using traditional methods. I read that it's hand-spun by the wives of gauchos - the traditional cowboys of South America - from yarn that hat been kettle-dyed. It just sounds so romantic! Before I boug... (read more)

The parties in most Latin American countries don’t pick up until midnight or later. In Panama’s Calle Uruguay, a conglomerate of trendy night venues that boast anything from salsa to techno to classic rock, the street it’s a veritable mixing bowl of drunk, wealthy Panamanians and visiting foreigners. A brand of gastronomic entrepreneurs saw this mix of inebriated souls with the beer munchies, and decided to take to the streets to take on the task of feeding their insatiable cravings. And so, the hotdog man, the empanada guy, and the taco stand were born. These men and women are at once yo... (read more)

9. Sahara Bar, Live Music Venue in Panama
May 10, 2007

Before actually venturing to Calle Uruguay, I passed through it twice on consecutive tours of my new home city, Panama. The most interesting bar to me, by far was Sahara. From the outside it looks like there are two entrances, one leads you up an outdoor staircase that is framed by a circular white tunnel, and the other is a metal entrance ramp where the doorman sits collecting money from the male party-goers. Despite that fact, the bar always seems to have a larger number of girls than guys, especially after you weed out the prostitutes. It turns out, if the tunnel second-story entrance ... (read more)
