His long reign of about fifty-two years was "the most prosperous excepting that of Jehoshaphat since the time of Solomon." He was a vigorous and able ruler, and "his name spread abroad, even to the entering in of Egypt" (2 Chr. 268, 14). In the earlier part of his reign, under the influence of a prophet named Zechariah, he was faithful to Yahweh, and "did that which was right in the sight of the Lord" (2 Kings 153; 2 Chr. 264, 5) In Jerusalem he made machines designed by skillful men for use on the towers and on the corner defenses to shoot arrows and hurl large stones. His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful. But then, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense (2Chr. 26 15-16). Uzziah was suddenly struck with tzaraat while in the act of offering incense (2Chr. 2619-21), and he was driven from the Temple and compelled to reside in "a separate house" to the death (2 Kings 155, 27; 2 Chr. 263). The government was turned over to his son Jotham (2 Kings 155), indicating a coregency that lasted for the last 11 years of Uzziah's life (751/750 to 740/739 BC).

1. Bible Stories: Isaiah
April 16, 2009
Isaiah grew up in Jerusalem among those of the family of David. He began to preach when he was just fifteen years old. He lived to be an old man of eighty five. All his life he served the Lord. As a young man growing up King Uzziah was on the throne. He was a godly king, who later sinned and became a leper, all this had made an impression on Isaiah.
In the same year that King Uzziah died Isaiah went up to the temple one day to worship. As he waited quietly there in the house of God, he saw a wonderful vision. Later he wrote, “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up.” Abov... (read more)

2. Bible Stories: King Uzziah
April 16, 2009
King Uzziah was only sixteen when he became king and he ruled the people for fifty two years. He prayed and looked to God to help him, and God did. He gave him victory over his enemies, and they built up a strong army. He built walls and towers around Jerusalem to protect them. The Bible says, “As long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper,” 2 Chronicles 26:5. “And he was marvellously helped till he was strong,” 2 Chronicles 26:15.
When he had a strong army and walls and towers, he became proud and sinned against God. One day he went to the temple. It was the work of the priest... (read more)

3. Here I Am (Gulp!), Lord!
July 28, 2008
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
"Here I am, Lord Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord If you lead me I will hold your people in my heart"
(Words and Music by Dan Schutte, 1981; adapt. by Carlton R. Young, 1988)
A few years ago my dear friend, Robbie, gave me new insight into the significance of this song. We must have been singing it in a service and I told her how much I liked it. She said something like, "But have you ever thought of the seriousness of the words--about what you're saying when you sing this song?"
And, therein, lie... (read more)
